Chapter Seventeen

“Surprise!” We all scream and I love the look on Raegan’s face as she squeals in delight. I still cannot believe I pulled this surprise birthday party off without her finding out about it. With all the moping around she was doing, I wanted to tell her about it just to cheer her up. Since the dinner party at my parents’ house she’s done nothing, but call me and complain about how much of a drag her birthday was going to be. When we met for lunch, she was nearly in tears about it and pouted about how ‘it wasn’t fair.’ My mom was a wreck too. She was getting tired of hiding the party from her just as much as I was. As I look at my little sister now, I know it was worth it. She’s completely surprised. “I can’t believe this! I thought I was going to have a boring dinner party!” she squeals, excitedly. “I know. You whined about it all week.” I remind her, making a face. I watch with only a twinge of jealousy as she hugs mom and dad and bounces off to see all of her friends. Their relationship is so easy. They both welcome her with open arms. My relationship with mom is a lot easier, but I don’t know that I ever see my dad welcoming me with open arms that way.

“You’ve done an amazing job here. I’m so glad I get to be a part of this.” Sam compliments. “I can’t wait to see her face when she sees your birthday present.” I couldn’t either. I’d managed to book her favorite singer, Cole Taylor, as the entertainment. She’s probably going to faint or attack him. I’m not sure which one, but I can’t wait to find out. I turn my focus on Sam. I’ve been asking her all week about who she was bringing, but she’s refused to answer me. “Now where is this mystery date of yours?” I ask. With all of Sam’s shady behavior, I have a really bad feeling about it. I say a silent prayer that it’s not Jared. Anyone, but Jared. “He’s running a little late, but he’ll be here. Don’t worry. Actually, there he is now.” I follow her gaze, a sick feeling growing in the pit of my stomach. “You have got to be fucking kidding me, Sam. Please tell me this isn’t happening.” She stands silently next to me. Her silence confirms my worst fears. When I grab her arm she finally responds. “He’s changed, Kingsley. I promise. Be nice.” Jared smiles that shit-eating grin of his as he approaches. “Long time, no see, Kingsley. Looking good.” I could vomit right now. “Yeah, you too. You look clean. Are you clean?”

“I said be nice.” Sam grits her teeth. “Glad you could make it.” I mumble. “Sam, can I have a quick word?” Without letting her answer, I pull her away, ushering her into the restroom. “What the hell are you thinking? Jared never changes.
