Chapter Seventeen

A faint humming reached Alex’s ears as he struggled out of his sleep-induced haze. The boat rocked to and fro, as the weight of the blanket wrapped around him. He curled into the warmth, not sure if he wanted to wake up or not.

He felt a shift in movement and heard the faint sound of footsteps. He furrowed his brow before slowly opening his eyes, feeling a strong need to wake up. He jerked upward when gold eyes met his gaze from across the room. Male Suzuhah—he needed a better way to distinguish the two siblings—was seated on the floor, gaze on him before turning his attention toward the window. “So, you are up.”

Alex blinked a few times, sitting up as the sheets pooled around him, rubbing one eye tiredly. “Suzuhah? What are you doing?”

Suzuhah hummed thoughtfully, but didn’t respond for the longest time. Finally, he turned back to Alex with a faint smile. “Just wanted to check something, that’s all. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Oh.” Alex wasn’t sure what to say to that. He swung his legs out of bed, still a little tired, but feeling like he’d been sleeping long enough at this point. “Is everything all right now? Do you need some help?” He couldn’t suppress the yawn from escaping and quickly covered it as Suzuhah’s head jerked in his direction.

“Ah, yeah, everything’s fine.” Suzuhah stared at him for a while, confusion and a hint of— was that frustration? —played over his face. He stood, pushing against the wall and walking over to the doorway, brushing past Alex. He paused at the doorway, staring at it for a while. Alex stretched and pushed himself to his feet, feeling his stomach growl. He winced and grinned sheepishly. “Hey, have you eaten?”

“Aren’t you suspicious of me?”

The stark change in topic startled Alex, causing him to still. Suzuhah turned to him, the frustration now clear on his face. “I know your friend is, Milos, and I know the way you look at me and my sister. So why...?”

Alex paused, thinking over his response carefully before letting out a breath. “Well, to be honest, of course I’m suspicious of you.” Suzuhah stiffened, yet Alex continued, “That doesn’t mean I won’t still try to be friendly with you or your sister. Milos has the suspicions covered, and I know you wouldn’t hurt Rita.” Alex couldn’t help the smile from stretching over his face as Suzuhah shifted, seeming somewhat uncomfortable. “Basically, I can be suspicious, but still want to try to be your friend, right?”

“Not really.” Suzuhah stared at him blankly and Alex shook his head.

“That’s fair. I guess it’s just me who thinks that. Maybe I’m just overly optimistic.” He shrugged. “But to be honest, I would rather be optimistic, wouldn’t you?”

Suzuhah opened and closed his mouth for a moment, lost, before he snapped it shut and turned to the doorway, opening it sharply. “Why can’t you all just make sense?” He spoke harshly, but Alex noticed the faint fondness that trickled into his voice.
