Chapter Thirteen

I charged into the darkness of the house, Jax’s shifted wolf form hot on my heels. He mouthed at my shirtsleeves gently, attempting to pull me back out onto the deck and away from the home. I shook him off, sending him a glare that warned him to leave me alone. Back outside, more footsteps thumped up the damaged wooden steps and stopped at the door’s threshold.

“Thea.” Darien hissed at me, his tone urgent. “Get back out here, you can’t go alone.”

“I’m not alone,” I whispered back, reaching down to pat Jax on the head. “Jax is here. And you guys are out there.”

Seok was a few feet behind Darien, and I spotted Koko, Thiron, Ali, and Layla peeking out of the tree line in the distance. The tip of an arrow glinted in the moonlight, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that Koko might be aiming straight for me. I didn’t doubt she would land her mark exactly when she wanted to.

“Thea,” Darien said my name like a warning, but I chose to ignore him. A muffled thump at the far end of the home had managed to catch my attention.

My eyes finally adjusted to the gloom of the home, and I realized I was standing in a small dining room. A petite mahogany dining table stood to my right, three chairs overturned on the ground around it. Along the far wall, a long cabinet holding fine dishes and glassware stood resolute. The glass of the doors to the cabinet was smashed, but the interior objects seemed relatively unharmed.

To my left, a kitchen stood silent, appliances dark, like the house had suffered some kind of electrical outage. Ahead of me, the dining room merged into a family room with a pleasant L-shaped couch taking up most of the space. It looked positively cozy, and I probably would have attempted to take a nap on it if the circumstances were different. As it was, pillows were scattered across the room and the glass coffee table at the center was shattered into hundreds of jagged pieces.

More scuffling sounds emerged from the area to my left, and I crept through the living room down the long hallway. A few doors stood on each side of the hall; the first one on the right and left were, respectfully, a small bedroom and a bathroom. At the end of the hall, the door on the right opened onto another dark, abandoned bedroom. From the cartoonish space bed sheets and posters of cartoon characters on the walls, I gathered it belonged to a child.

The door to my left was closed, and this was where the thumping and scraping sounds were coming from.

I glanced down at Jax, suddenly nervous about what we would find. The great wolf nudged my hand with his furry head, and I took a deep breath to steady myself. Quiet footsteps made me jump, and I whipped my head around to see Darien approaching the two of us, Seok several paces behind and radiating strong electrical energy.
