Chapter 8

Powerhouse

“Be bold! That’s one way

Of getting through life.”

~ Archilochus (680 BC - 645 BC), warrior poet, a Greek mercenary from the island of Paros

I roamed for hours before I finally figured out where I needed to go. Telepathically Blick had been trying to contact me. I ignored his invasion of thoughts. Even though I knew I needed to feed, I decided to skip it for the night. I didn’t want to see what I’d turn into if I drank anyone’s blood. Besides, I was still experiencing lasting effects from the earlier dramatic shifts. Go figure. It was well past midnight when I walked into Max’s place, the Dragon Skull.

“Good heavens, what has the cat dragged in?”

“Not funny, Max,” I spat at him. Lifting up one of my hands, I watched as it shifted into the paw of a tiger. I extended my furry fingers and ejected the long, razor-sharp claws. Within the same few seconds, my hand returned to normal. I sighed heavily. “I could use a drink,” I announced.

He studied me for some minutes, and I felt a coldness take hold of him. “I see. Well, that’s a fun new trick. What have you been doing, I wonder.”

“Enjoying the company of a knitting circle of busybodies, including my own mother.”

“Oh,” he said slowly, probably processing who I meant. Then he added, “Let’s at least be social and have a drink. There’s a spot near the back if you’d like to head that way. It’s a quiet crowd tonight, so I’m closing up soon. I’ll join you shortly.”

I fell into a booth near the back door where it was quiet and secluded. Searching around for my phone, I realized I didn’t know where it was. I couldn’t text Lynn or Grace, and I knew I needed to reach out to Blick. Finally, I sent him a brief thought, ‘I’m okay. I can add natural shapeshifter to my bag of tricks. But we need to talk. I don’t think I should go visit your grandmother.’

A few minutes later, Max appeared before me holding the skull-shaped liquor bottle that was his house brand of tequila.

“Rayea, you do look like you need a drink. Tell me what’s going on. Why can you suddenly shift into something outside your house? What was that paw thing? Start there.”

“Outside my house,” I repeated as I clinked the shot glass against the skull bottle, a favorite pastime I used to enjoy at his bar. “I haven’t had this stuff in forever. Maybe this isn’t a good idea.” I searched his worn, creased face for answers. Someone had to have answers for me after the experience I had just had.

“Max, tell me. Is there a possibility that any one celestial being, let’s say, could be a shapeshifter that could shift into any form? Maia called me a natural shapeshifter. And Blick once called me that too. But my house is that of the Dragon, not the Lion, or Wolf. So I can’t understand what Maia meant.” I grabbed the bottle and poured myself another shot.
