Chapter 15- Combat Class

After the rest of the class made their first blood replenishing tonic, Professor Rondo spent what time remained giving us a detailed lecture on the beginnings of alchemy and what we’d be working on in our next few lessons.

When the bell chimed, she dismissed us, and all the students quickly rushed out, no doubt heading to the cafeteria to grab some lunch before our next class.

I turned as I stood, trying to catch Taylor, but he was already heading out the door.

“Wanna grab some food? Alchemy always makes me hungry,” Callan said as he grabbed his notes and stood from his chair.

“Raincheck, I need to catch Taylor.”

He smirked. “Cheating on your best friend already?”

I laughed, gathering up my papers and the vial of blood tonic. “Who’re you kidding? Tess is my best friend.”

Callan shook his head as Nera and Tess appeared, their hands filled with the products of their own work in class. “Nu-uh. You have officially upgraded Tess to girlfriend. Means you’re in the market for a new best friend. This is me submitting my application.” He chuckled. “I need friends.”

“Yeah, sure, I’ll take it under advisement, but keep in mind applications expire after a period of six months,” I said, passing Tess and Nera as I headed for the door.

“Michael?” Tess called after me. “Want to go on a lunch date?”

“Later, maybe dinner. I have something I have to do!” I said, and then I was out the door and running down the hallway.

Taylor was quick, furtive, like a fox as he slipped around the students, his tied back auburn hair bobbing behind him as he weaved down the hall, eager to be somewhere.

Damn. He’s fast.

I got a careful grip on my stuff and chased off after him down the marble hall. But by the time I got to the door, he was already halfway up the street.

I really didn’t want a marathon between classes, but it looks like I don’t have a choice.

Without waiting for him to get even further ahead of me, I sprinted the distance between us, going full tilt in my bid to catch the elusive E-ranker, and just before he reached the door to the cafeteria building, I skidded to a halt beside him.

“Taylor! Hey, Taylor. Hold up,” I said, grabbing him by the shoulder. He flinched and whirled on me, dropping his notes.

“Ah!” he shouted, throwing his hands up before he realized it was me. He paused and let out a sigh of relief. “Oh, Michael, it’s just you. What do you need?” His eyes were calm, but they still held suspicion in them as he stooped to pick up what he dropped.

“Oh, uh. I was hoping you had a minute to talk. I wanted to ask you a few things.”

He shrugged as he stood, his small nose scrunching. “I’ve got some time, but I need to be in and out of the cafeteria quickly, so we have to make it fast.”

“Sure.” I nodded to him. “You hungry? ‘Cause I’m starving.
