Additionally, Architect A, Accountants C and F, Graphic Designer A and Solicitor A all reported similar duties that imposed spatial constraints upon their working practices. However, the extent of these spatial constraints differed between participants. Architect A and Accountant F were able to manage their supervisory responsibilities effectively whilst away from the office thanks to their competence in using appropriate technologies and other materials. Furthermore, Accountant B described how available ICTs and related competencies have enabled supervisory responsibilities and commitments to be extended over greater distances and temporal boundaries. These competencies negate the need for co-presence in these circumstances; however, as the participant explains, the ‘type’ of work conducted during these face-to-face meetings via ‘FaceTime’ differs to that usually undertaken within the office when they are both present:Oh, there is FaceTime. So he goes away for a month over the festive period, we would FaceTime because he has an iPad and so do I. And that was the best way to do it, and that was checking in, every other day or so. It’s checking, well it would be checking, you know are there any problems, you know I would be updating him on where I was. It is kind of like he is in the office, we just have to chat about anything that needs to be done. The only problem I think is if I need to help with more detailed things, detailed software and that sort of stuff, but that doesn’t come around too often.
