I’m at the hospital with my father. He’s suffered a heart attack. No idea if he’s going to pull through or not, so forgive me for speaking out of turn to your mother.

Shit! Sorry to hear that, Sara. Pass on our best wishes to your mother. I’ll explain the situation to Mum. Keep us informed.

If I get the chance.

Having sent her reply, Sara shoved the phone in her pocket. She returned to sit alongside her mother, trying her hardest to block out the persistent Charlotte.

Mark appeared at the curtain around thirty minutes later. She left her chair quietly, careful not to wake her mother, and kissed him. She held back the emotion trying to emerge.

“How are you holding up?” he asked, kissing her forehead and then her cheek.

“I’m fine. Mum’s fine, she’s still sleeping, it must be the meds they’ve given her. No news on Dad as yet, though. That’s the toughest part, the not knowing.”

“I know, hang in there. If they’re still assessing him, that could take some time, especially if he’s unconscious and unable to tell them what’s wrong.”

“I know. I appreciate you coming. Sorry to be a pest.”

“You’re not, and it’s my pleasure. I’m glad you rang me, I would have been disappointed if you hadn’t.”

Her mother stirred. “Sara, is that the doctor, dear?”

She drew back the curtain to reveal Mark. “No, Mum, it’s Mark. He’s come to see how you’re doing.”

“That’s nice. Don’t be shy, Mark. Come closer, let me see the man who has stolen my daughter’s heart.”

Sara’s cheeks heated, and she held out a hand to Mark, encouraging him to say hello to her mother properly.

“Hello, Mrs Beaumont. Lovely to meet you. Sorry it’s under such awful conditions. How are you doing?”

“Now don’t go making me feel older than I am. You can call me Elizabeth.”

Mark smiled and moved around the other side of the bed. He bent to kiss her cheek and clasped her mother’s hand to his chest. “The pleasure is all mine. Now, what have you been up to?”

“It’s that daft husband of mine. He took an interest in a tree and wanted a closer inspection, except he forgot he was driving the damn car at the time.”

The three of them laughed. Sara stopped immediately realising the severity of the situation. Her father was gravely ill, and here she was laughing as if none of them had a care in the world.

They made small talk for the next twenty minutes or so and then fell silent when the doctor reappeared. “Right, we’re going to be moving you up onto the ward soon, Mrs Beaumont. How are you feeling?”

“A lot better, Doctor, thank you. I’d rather go home if it’s all the same.”

“Nonsense. That’s more than I dare do at this stage. Let’s see how you go overnight and make plans to send you home tomorrow. You’ll need looking after, though.” The doctor turned to Sara.

“She’ll be thoroughly spoilt, I promise you, Doctor.” She made a note to ring the DCI to ask for a few days off.
