Chapter 13

“Where the hell have you been?” Eric says as I let myself in through the front door. “Have you seen the time? Do you have any idea how frantic I’ve been?”

Frantic? I’m a little confused and I try to check my watch but realise I don’t have it on.

“It’s not that late,” I say, despite not actually knowing what time it actually is. “And I talked to you,” I add. Kicking off my heels and shuffling out of my coat. “And I texted to say I was on my way. I told you I was okay. That I was safe. And look, I’m here now. In one piece, so what was there to be frantic about exactly?”

Eric Scowls, his eyes narrowing as he leans into me. He looks mad. Mad but also soft around the edges. He’s wearing only a pair of cotton sleep shorts with no t-shirt. His eyes are sleepy and yet somehow wide awake, too. And his hair is a complete mess, like he’s been in bed but couldn’t settle. Tossing and turning. Unable to switch off.

“Why would I be frantic?” he repeats in a sarcastic tone. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because I realised about ten minutes after you hung up that I’m an idiot for letting you go off to meet a complete stranger on your own? But then my judgement where you’re concerned is always a little off, right?”

“Eric,” I say, reaching out and placing my hand on his bare chest and patting him as if to offer comfort. “We talked about this. It was just Liam. He’s fine. He’s definitely not some weirdo, and what was supposed to happen to me in a crowded bar, anyway?”

I don’t mention that we didn’t exactly stay in the bar. And I suppose with hindsight I can see that what I did was pretty darned crazy. Going off with a virtual stranger to his flat and, well, doing what we did, but the thing is, meeting Liam like that didn’t feel like I was getting together with a stranger. It didn’t actually feel any different to meeting Jack again after all those years. Or not really. Not entirely. Liam’s okay either way.

“Liam is okay,” I say, and I’m about to say more when Eric leans in a little closer and his nostrils flare.

I know straight away that Eric has something to say, as his rage instantly steps up a notch.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” he says, shaking his head and taking another step closer to me. “You smell of him, Jesus, Jessica. You smell of another man. How could you… I mean…” He pauses. Sighing. “Why am I not surprised? Except that I thought tonight was supposed to be about getting to know one another.”

“It was,” I say, lifting my eyes to his just as Eric unexpectedly takes one more step and this time moves in so close that he backs me up against the wall. He’s a little angrier. A little mean-looking when you consider how his eyes find mine and one corner of his mouth curls into a sneer.
