Chapter 21
Malcolm Baines closed the curtains before he turned on the lights â he didnât want anyone outside being able to see in. They were watching him again, he could sense it. There was no evidence to prove it, but he knew: a car in his rear-view mirror for too long; the stranger across the road reading a newspaper, glancing in his direction; a woman in the supermarket walking down the same aisles. Everyone was a suspect. His paranoia was reaching epic proportions; he hadnât felt so frightened since the months following the release of his first book. That was a very uncomfortable time. Threats had been made online and through the post, and images of him were posted on the dark web. The police werenât interested in his accusations that he was being followed, and harassed online. It wasnât a priority for them. Unless a crime was committed, or he could identify an individual making threats, there was nothing they could do. This time felt different, there was substance to his claims, real people were involved. There were faces and names behind the shadowy crimes. People had been murdered. It was all over the television, newspapers and the internet; the discovery of bodies in the drains was of interest worldwide. It gave credence to what heâd been saying for years â no one would admit he was right, of course, but they couldnât deny that this time there was something behind his exposé. What had happened at Stanley House was horrific, but not surprising to him. He knew they were there, lurking in the darkness, blending in with the mundane during daylight hours, only revealing their true selves behind closed doors, after the witching hour. They had finally exposed themselves and Malcolm embraced it. He remembered picking up a rock when he was a boy, watching the woodlice and earwigs scurrying for cover, seeking a dark place to hide. This was what heâd been waiting for. They were scurrying for cover but they had left irrefutable evidence behind and it was beyond anything he could have imagined. The aftermath would echo through the years. People are fascinated by monsters, especially human monsters. Films would be made, documentaries commissioned, and books written. Malcolm needed to ride the crest of the wave; his books were already out there. It would make him unpopular but it wouldnât be the first time. This could be his ticket out of the UK, a chance to live in the sunshine and write â somewhere he didnât need to look over his shoulder.
He poured himself a brandy and sat down at his computer. His inbox was crammed with requests to be interviewed about the murders and the occult connection. His agent had called with multiple requests to take quotes from his books. Malcolm had agreed â the more exposure, the better, and he could use the money. He was barely keeping his head above water. Heâd been trying to gain publicity for his works for over a decade and no one had wanted to know.
