QUEEN HAD HER OWN KEY to the Ranch. She was uncertain if the house slept. Still, she hit the doorbell to give Delilah the notice she was there. She unlocked the door and came inside. Delilah was already halfway down the stairs in her robe when she entered. Her friend had a towel wrapped up and around her hair. She was fresh out of the shower. Queen rolled her eyes at the cheery smile on Delilahâs face. She pointed for them to head to the back of the ranch, to the television room. Delilah nodded and followed her.
Earlier, when she couldnât find her friend, she was pushed into extreme anxiety. Goodiva was missing, and now her only other friend in the world was at that moment. Queen went to the cottage to talk to Maverick to see if he had heard from her. There was no answer to her knocking at the door. She returned and spoke to Delilahâs parents again. For Queen, it didnât make sense. Delilah was not the kind of mother to disappear. She went to her room to see if there was something sheâd left, and for some reason, she decided again to check on Maverick. This time she relied on the security feed she installed under Delilahâs request to the cottage. They didnât know what kind of man he was and wanted to keep an eye on him. The first thing she noticed was Delilahâs coat and dress left on the floor. Queen should have known the answer to her question. But she checked the bedrooms and caught a glimpse of the two making love.
âMy cell phone is broken. I would have called you.â Delilah said. âSorry for worrying you and mama. I was just so messed up after the brunch I needed to go somewhere and clear my head.â
Queen watched her friend. Observed her mannerism in silence.
âSo you heard, huh?â Delilah smiled. She plopped down in a sofa chair and crossed her legs. âI know. I know. Itâs on the internet. All over the news.â Delilah rolled her eyes and gave a girlish blush. âI donât know where to start. I didnât know what I was going to do it when I went to that brunch. I didnât know. But then I saw Mother Abigail and everything, even from when we were kids, all came back Queen. It all came rushing back to me. She confessed. Mother Abigail confessed! She bragged about turning our parents against us after Peter Collinâs died. I know mama and daddy signed on board for it, but to hear Mother Abigail say it to my face. Something in my head snapped. I didnât care anymore.â
âWhere did you go? Afterwards?â Queen asked.
âHuh? I just toldââ
âWhere did you go, Dee?â
âFor a drive. I drove around, and then it got late, and I came back here.â
âYouâre lying.â Queen sat forward. âI knew something was going on with you. Youâve been acting weird since day one. I knew it. But I got all this stuff Iâm managing with Goodiva missing and this damn quarantine.
