“Charming,” Samuel said as he glanced up at me.

It would have been nice to meet him inside the building, but instead, he sat outside on the steps talking to a couple of strangers. To me, not him. He seemed very friendly with them.

I gave him a withering stare, then crossed my arms over my chest. He wasn’t paying me a compliment, I could tell by how his lips were twitching, but that wasn’t the point. I wanted something from him, and I refused to leave until he acquiesced. Two can play this game.

“These are my brothers,” he said, nodding at each of the handsome young men in his company. As Samuel stood up, I realized that they were all damn near the same height, even though they looked nothing alike. He was blonde-haired and blue-eyed, while the others had darker hair and the most unusual eye colors I’d ever seen.

Holding the door open to the university library, he introduced us to each other as we went by. “Edi, Zal, Larisa. Larisa, Edi, Zal.”

“Nice to meet you guys,” I stated awkwardly as I glanced at them over my shoulder. Samuel fell into step beside me as we walked toward the main library room.

“Interesting,” he remarked as we entered.

“What?”

“You didn’t think it was nice to meet me?” he inquired in a teasing tone.

I gave him a playful shove, then immediately retracted my hands when I felt that same cold chill that had been haunting me for the past hour or so emanating from his body. He gave me a friendly smirk when I recoiled, then shook his head as he led the way to what seemed to be his favorite table.

“Sit,” he encouraged as he pulled out a chair for me.

I arched an eyebrow at Samuel suspiciously as he walked around to the other side and took the seat directly across from me, his brothers flanking him on either side.

“Weird.”

“What is, Larisa?”

“Nothing, you guys just kind of reminded me of Jupiter and her moons. Orbiting. You know,” I finished, waving a hand dismissively.

“She doesn’t know who you are?” Edi asked Samuel with a curious glance. He shook his head before he clasped his hands in front of him on the table, then turned his attention to me.

“Oh, this should be fun to see, Zal,” he remarked with a huge grin.

All three men watched me intently as Samuel cleared his throat. “I need your help.”

“My help?” I echoed, making a face. “With what? And just because I’m asking, don’t assume that’s a yes.” I didn’t intend on using The Bitch Voice again. It just slipped out.

“Can I tell her?” Edi asked, glancing at Samuel. The latter leaned back in his chair as he studied his brother for a moment, his fingers now drumming along the tabletop. Samuel sighed as he looked at me again, then nodded. “Okay, I’m going to need you not to have an adverse reaction to this,” Edi began with a friendly smile. “But have you noticed anything different about Samuel?”

“No.
