Chapter 20

After a quick lunch, Ameris found herself without a training partner. Lena was still gone from this morning, and Layne wasn’t anywhere around. If she were really diligent, she would find Rhett or Braxton, but she wasn’t feeling it. She decided instead to try to slip inside the healers’ hut to see Darian. She walked that way, being careful to keep her head down. She didn’t want anybody to stop her this time.

When she got to the hut, she expected someone to stop her; but nobody did. Carefully, she entered the hut. Inside, the large room was split into individual rooms by cloth hanging from the thatched roof. “Can I help you?”

Ameris jumped at the voice behind her. She spun around and saw a girl who didn’t look much older than she was. “I’m looking for Darian,” she said quietly. The girl nodded and walked towards one of the makeshift rooms. “He’s in here,” she said. She held the cloth back so Ameris could go inside; then she disappeared without another word. Ameris was shocked; she didn’t think she’d be able to get in this easily.

She turned to look at Darian and froze. Her eyes took him in as tears pooled in her eyes. There wasn’t a part of him that wasn’t covered in some kind of bandage. She put her hand up to her mouth. “What did they do to you?” she whispered. She moved closer to his bed, being careful not to bump it or him. “I’m so sorry, Darian,” she said in a low voice. “This is all my fault; I should have never let this happen. We should have never left you behind. I’m so sorry.” She reached up and wiped a tear away. “I promise you, though. They will pay for this. I will not rest until the King is dead, if he isn’t already, until Leofric is gone, until the captain of the guard has been replaced and-” she broke off her tirade when she heard a sound. She looked down and saw bright green eyes staring at her. “Darian! You’re awake!”

She saw the confused look in his eyes, then the panic. He began trying to move, but all the bandages and restraints kept him from doing so. This only made him panic more. “Darian, stop. You're going to hurt yourself.” When he didn’t listen, she tried calling out to the healer she had met on her way in.

“Help! Somebody please help! He’s going to hurt himself,” she called out. Now she stood at Darian’s bedside with her arms wrapped around him trying to get him to calm down and trying to keep him from rolling off the bed.

An older woman shoved aside the cloth and entered Darian’s room; the young woman ran in behind her. Together, the three of them got him back onto the bed. “What did you do to him?” she asked with barely concealed anger. She forced open his mouth and put something inside.

“Nothing,” Ameris said. “I just talked to him.
