Defiled by the Board Room

The building of Star Enterprises stretched impossibly high into the cloudless Manhattan sky. Celeste stared up at it, nerves bubbling up inside of her. Grasping the bottom of her too short skirt, she pulled it down for the hundredth time today. This was her first job interview, and she’d discovered that morning that she didn’t have any proper business clothing. Letting go of the hem, her skirt bounded back up to it’s inappropriate length. Celeste sighed. Hopefully they wouldn’t notice.

The lobby was all sleek white marble and bustled with busy looking people. Celeste felt shockingly out of place. She’d only just graduated high school. After not getting into any of the colleges she’d applied to, she thought she’d spend the summer working a minimum wage job. That was before she saw the ad for a marketing associate at a high profile magazine, no experience or education required. She sent in a photo of herself and a short email, as per the instructions on the ad, and was shocked when she got selected for an interview.

A gorgeous secretary told her to go to the fifth floor. When the elevator doors opened, Celeste was faced with another lobby, another secretary, and another waiting area. She gave the equally gorgeous secretary on this floor her name, and was advised to wait until they called her.

Celeste look around the waiting area. She was the only one who sat on the plush white couch.I must be their only interview today,Celeste thought.

She crossed her legs, pulling the hem of the skirt down. Taking a few deep breaths, she tried to calm herself. She’d been up the night before, researching common interview questions on the internet. If they asked what animal she was most like, she planned to say a lion, a powerful leader. What was her biggest flaw? She worked too hard. Where did she see herself in five years? Staying dedicated to the same company, of course.

“Celeste,” the secretary said.

Celeste perked up, standing quickly.

“Right this way,” the secretary said.

Celeste followed the secretary down a labyrinthian hallway, passing offices and cubicles. The secretary paused in front of a door. She narrowed her eyes, smiling at Celeste,

“Good luck,” she said, with a hint of conspiratorial knowing.

Celeste stared at her, trying to guess her meaning. The secretary opened the door. When Celeste looked inside, her nerves came back in full force. The room was a vast rectangle. At one end was a long table that ran the width of the wall where eight older men in suits sat on one side, watching her. In front of the table, nearly at the other end of the room was a single chair. Celeste looked desperately to the secretary.

“Please, sit,” the secretary said, pointing to the chair.

Celeste walked into the room, and the door was immediately shut behind her. She continued on to the chair, her heels clicking on the tile floor. The men’s eyes followed her as she walked, and they didn’t say a word. She sat down carefully.
