Chapter Nine

The rest of Sunday was spent in Elijah’s large bed. They slept, ate, and had sex again. Mark discovered that Elijah’s hair was exactly as soft as it appeared. After dinner, Elijah went to feed Hemming and Mark went in search of his phone. The evening news they’d watched with dinner reported that schools and businesses across the city would be closed the following day; he needed to know what his plans were for tomorrow. A hard knot of dread settled in his stomach when he picked up his phone, and he stared at it for a long time. He’d skipped Sunday dinner. Well, forgotten about it, actually, what with having his dick in Elijah’s ass.

Yesterday morning, he'd patently ignored the rush of texts and missed call notifications following his no-show Friday night at Mario’s party so as to check his electricity app and subsequently receive Elijah’s text. Once he’d entered Elijah’s address into his GPS, he’d powered off his phone. He was loath to power it on now. He didn’t want to acknowledge, much less face, the new tsunami of texts and missed calls for skipping dinner that would light up the device and take minutes to process—just to see if he had to show up for work tomorrow morning.

Hemming nosed at his leg and Mark startled, surprised to find Hemming and Elijah both. His heart beat against his ribs.

“You okay? Is your phone dead; do you need to borrow a charger?”

Mark shook his head. “If I turn this thing on, I’ll be inundated with reminders about how self-centered and ugly my family is and I just... This weekend has been like a dream and I’m not ready to wake up yet.”

Elijah pulled him into a hug. “But?”

Mark clung to Elijah and refused to let his hurt surface. “But I need to know if I have to go to work tomorrow.”

“Ah.” Elijah squeezed him close. “I have a laptop. You could check your email? Or you could use my phone and call someone?”

Mark let go and goggled at Elijah. “Really? You’d do that?”

Elijah shook his head, his expression confused. “Yeah? Why wouldn’t I?”

“You’re a professional hockey player, you gotta protect your privacy, don’t you?”

“You’ve had my dick in your mouth, I think I can trust you to make a phone call. Also, I have it set up to show no caller id, so whoever you call isn’t going to see a number.” He took Mark’s phone and tossed it on the bed, then took his hand. “C’mon.”

Back up in his room, Elijah entered his PIN and handed Mark his cell phone. “Here.”

“Thank you.”

Elijah nodded. “I’m gonna find something for dessert while you make that call.” He thumbed at the stairs and then made a hand gesture at Hemming. Hemming sat. “Stay, boy.”

Mark watched him disappear and dropped to the edge of the bed next to where Hemming sat and patted the dog’s head. He dialed his boss’s number and prayed he picked up.

“Well?” Elijah reappeared carrying a couple of small parfait glasses with spoons sticking out of them.
