Chapter Twenty-One

The next morning after dropping Els at school again, Nate began asking around the shops on the Merchant Mile. He was sure someone there would know of coin collectors or businesses specializing in foreign money. There was a saying in Daggerport that if it could be bought anywhere, then someone was selling it on the Merchant Mile.

He was about to put that to the test.

He started by asking if any shops dealt with foreign money. Once he had found a shop that did money exchanges, he asked them if there were any shops that focused on collecting rare coins or antiques. That led to more shops, and he ended up at a dwarven-owned business called Antique Coins, Rare and Fine. He was no longer on the Mile, but he supposed the saying was true enough since his questions there led to finding the shop he needed. Better still would have been if he had the contacts among wealthy collectors, but that kind of effort was more than he was willing to put in given his time crunch.

Besides, he didn't care about squeezing every copper out of a deal to sell the coins. He just wanted to make sure he had enough money to live. Once his duel with Illrune took place, the Spellswords would probably declare him to be an outlaw and force the king of Canoldir not to let him work with the Royal Guard any longer, even as a mage. There was no way he would allow Illrune to walk away from their fight, and he had literally traveled through time to master the sword in order to defeat him. He was going to fight, and guild rules be damned.

Unfortunately, that meant he wouldn't have a job afterward, but he was willing to pay that price. Still, that meant the money he made off the sale of the coins and that emerald would be all he had to live off of for a while. Worse, he wasn't sure how much he would need to spend before his confrontation with Illrune, he had some money left after paying the Spellsword contract, but would it be enough?

With those things on his mind, he entered the shop, ready to haggle to the best of his limited ability. He was immediately worried when he saw the dwarf proprietor. Every interaction he'd had with one of them so far had left him with the impression that they were inflexible and stubborn. Not a good trait for haggling against!

The shop was small but filled with glass cabinets displaying coins from nations that Nate had never heard of before, many of which were long gone from history.

Stepping up to the dwarf's desk, he asked, "Do you buy rare coins?"

The dwarf frowned as he looked up from the coin he was studying with a magnifying lens. "Depends on what you have?" He seemed to be viewing Nate skeptically. Apparently, a young man who was not richly dressed was not his usual clientèle.
