FICTION AND FACT

In October 2019, Osmani Garces-Ortiz was arrested in Arapahoe County, Colorado, on trespassing and drug charges. ICE asked the sheriff’s office to detain Garces-Ortiz, but they did not. In less than thirty days, he was arrested by the Aurora, Colorado Police Department on charges of attempted murder in a stabbing incident. As I said, stories like this happen almost every day. “Sanctuary” policies make cities and counties less safe for everyone, regardless of immigration status.

People who are against enforcing immigration laws and those who are for sanctuary cities constantly claim that illegal aliens commit fewer crimes than citizens. And the media—and many Democrats—believe them. They often refer to a 2018 study by the Cato Institute, which wrongly concludes that illegal aliens are less likely to engage in criminal activity. Let’s begin by setting the record straight about that report.

I believe the Cato study is flawed and biased and contains misleading conclusions. Other experts and organizations, such as the Center for Immigration Studies, agree. First, the Cato study isn’t based solely on crime data from the federal, state, and local crime databases—much of it is based on surveys. Second, their study combines crime statistics from both legal immigrants and illegal aliens, which skews the results. Third, of course a higher number of crimes committed are by citizens, because the overwhelming majority of people in this country are citizens. But when you compare percentages, the truth stands out. According to the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics 2018 report, 64 percent of all federal arrests were of non-US citizens.

When I was ICE director, approximately 20 percent of those the Border Patrol arrested for entering the country illegally had a criminal history in this country already. Think about that. One in five people arrested illegally crossing the border had already committed a crime here. And a huge number of those crimes are gang related. Once again, President Trump was right when he said that many criminals cross the border illegally. Many Democrats and Leftists in the media attacked him for it. Maybe they should do some research first and learn the facts.
