The empathy recipe

There are five aspects of empathic communication, and each of these is learnable. Let’s take a closer look at each one. They are:

1. Body language

The first step is to adopt an open body position (not crossing your arms or legs in front of yourself) and face the other person, making receptive eye contact. It sounds basic, and yet we don’t practise this often, even though so much of what we’re communicating comes from our body language and nonverbal cues.

And put your mobile away! Many times we forget that we have a mobile phone in our hand when we’re talking to someone, but even if your device is at your hip level, the other person subconsciously detects that your attention may be hijacked at any moment by the device. Now consider if, instead, you wanted to share something with your partner (or friend or colleague) and they said, “It sounds like what you have to say is important. Let me put my mobile away, so it doesn’t get in the way.” It’s a subtle but powerful difference!
