Cotton is the most popular fiber for sheets. But there are different grades of cotton, which are determined by the length of their staple or fiber—the longer the staple, the more luxurious and durable the grade of cotton. There are two levels above the basic grade of cotton: Egyptian cotton is the highest quality, providing the softest, most luxurious fabric and feel and Supima is a long, consistent staple cotton produced in the United States, which is very soft and durable.

One hundred percent cotton bed sheets will be the softest and most breathable because they are an all-natural fiber. The benefit of a cotton-polyester blend is that it will not wrinkle as much and is more moderately priced. However, polyester sheets will not breathe or absorb moisture as well as all-cotton ones.

Beyond fiber, you have a choice in the weave styles and thread counts. Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Assuming you are looking for the softest and most durable bed sheet set, the higher thread count will always be the best. Look for a thread count of at least 280 or higher. Today, even a 500 thread count is affordable.
