To make the best use of the main room, Iris sectioned it into four zones: an office with built-in bookcases, a living room with storage and a television concealed in a large vintage closet, a dining area, and a kitchen (which can be seen on pages 107–108).

Placing fabric on the inside of glass cabinet doors works to conceal what every busy family has but doesn’t wish to always put on display—lots of stuff! This cabinet tucks away a television and other electronics, bed linens, kids’ toys, Iris’ stash of props, paperwork, and other miscellany. It is both nice looking and hard working since it keeps the living room looking organized and peaceful. With pattern on both the cabinet and on the facing wall, where Iris placed her favorite wallpaper, there is also a feeling of harmony—this symmetry makes the space feel balanced and welcoming.
