Chapter Five

Evie

Fifteen times. That was how many times Bri had called me, and how many times I’d hit the decline button. I was sure she would make her way over to my place sooner or later, to chew me out for ignoring her, but all I wanted was to be alone. Which, if I was being honest, was exactly the opposite of what I needed.

Locking myself away from the world was one thing, it was what I’d made a habit of doing most days. But locking myself away with my thoughts, that was something else entirely – an incredibly stupid something else.

I leaned back on my couch, remote in hand, and settled in to catch-up with my favorite Agents. Was it a smart decision to watch a show that had a tendency to lead me on an emotional rollercoaster when I was already a mess? No, then again, I was pretty terrible at making decisions as it was.

Still, it was a better alternative than to facing my thoughts.

At least it would take my mind off of him.

“Emotions suck,” I muttered and went to hit play on the remote, only to hear my front door opening. “What the hell?”

There were only two other people that had a key to my apartment – my landlord and Bri – and assuming someone wasn’t trying to break in, I had a pretty good idea of who it was at the door.

Still, I reached beneath the cushion of the couch and grabbed a hold of the pocket knife my grandfather had given me when I was younger and tiptoed over beside the door, pressing my back against the wall, ready to attack if needed.

Only to find Bri juggling multiple bags as she struggled to slam the door shut behind her. I lowered the knife and let out a laugh. “Did you really think I was going to allow you to sulk in your apartment alone? You know me better than that, Eves.”

“True, but I didn’t expect you to just barge in unannounced. I probably should change the locks one of these days,” I groaned.

“Love, don’t think I won’t get your landlord to let me in.”

I didn’t even bother to respond to that because I knew she would. Heck, Bri would probably break down my door to get inside. The girl was hard-headed and determined, a simple lock wouldn’t keep her from barging into my apartment looking for me.

“Bri, I really just want to be alone right now, please.”

Ignoring me, she moved over to the couch and tossed her purse onto the coffee table, kicking off her heels in the process. “I come bearing sweets, horror movies, and comics. You’re not getting rid of me anytime soon, love.”

Admitting defeat, I slammed the front door shut and plopped down on the couch beside Bri, resting my head atop her shoulder. “Please tell me that Scream is in that pile of blu-rays.”

“C’mon now, do you not know me?” She teased, reaching near the bottom of the pile. “All four films.
