Chapter Six
Photos
Photos are an absolute nightmare! They need a whole chapter to themselves!
Sorting photos can be extremely interesting and distracting, but also very emotionally draining and time-consuming due to the vast range of memories they evoke. This can be especially difficult if there is a large quantity of them.
Ideally, all the photos can be set aside until you feel stronger and are able to deal with them. Just ensure that they are all kept safely together.
Photos with Just Scenery: These could be thrown away if they donât mean anything to you any more, or to anyone else.
Photos of Friends and Relations: Keep these together, preferably each of them annotated with name(s), relationship(s), place, occasion and date.
All the photos which you would like to keep can be put on to memory cards, computers and backup disks, so that you never lose them. Also, your family and friends can have copies which are easily accessible and do not take up any space!
If you would like to keep them as real photos, then you can if you wish, but it might be easier to have them categorised. For example, photos of friends kept together in one box; family photos in another.
I feel that it is really important to know where you come from, and therefore family photos of previous generations are vitally important. If possible, store them safely with any relevant details, such as names, as well as dates and places of birth, marriage and death.
