Jewel by the Pool
This medium-size deck adds plenty of outdoor living space: a generous dining area, an outdoor kitchen, and a sheltered living room. With natural ipé wood decking, stone pillars, and an artfully rounded front, it is also stunning to look at.
The Design
The first idea was to provide a deck surface with a clear view of the swimming pool and patio so that adults could easily monitor kids below while relaxing and eating. Another priority was a large dining area and grilling station to accommodate family meals and medium-size gatherings of friends.
The main (lower) deck addresses those needs. A table large enough for six or eight fits comfortably near the outdoor kitchen and takes up about half the space, leaving plenty of room for potted plants or conversation areas.
Children often revel in weather’s variations while adults tend to prefer shelter from sun or rain. The upper deck is covered by a roof while maintaining an open orientation to the rest of the deck and yard. A couch with small table against the wall is a great place to toast the day’s successes in comfort. When the weather gets oppressive, there is room to add more chairs.
CURVINESS. The signature 10-foot-radius (3m) curve in this ironwood deck greatly increased the difficulty and expense of the project, but everyone agreed it just felt right. The stairs leading to the patio are also curved, with the same radius as the deck, adding stylish symmetry.
ROOF WITH PILLARS. Gus built the roof at the same time as the deck. It is a real roof with shingles, not just an overhead structure, so it needs solid support. To hold up the roof stylishly, he constructed two pairs of pillars with a 15-foot (4.6m) space between, which preserves the open layout while still clearly marking out the different rooms.
Structurally, the pillars are made using posts that rest on the deck’s main beam. Pressure-treated 6x6 (15cmx15cm) posts rise to about 4 feet (1.2m) above the deck; they are boxed in with plywood, which is covered with faux stones (nearly indistinguishable from the real thing). Classic-looking white pillars of composite material run from the top of the post-and-stone structures to the underside of the roof. The pillar/stone combination has a casual elegance that elevates the overall deck design.
