Uncle Yoshi's Puzzles
Sue Lee was staring at the window as the wipers tried to keep up with the rain as they drove to the Government Code and Cipher School at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, England.
Her lack of sleep and time changes was catching up with her. She was hoping to get a few hours of sleep before starting the orientation meetings.
A new device was being introduced, but it was more than a decoder. It was called the Colossus Mark 1.
It used high-speed processing probabilities for cryptanalysis.
Sue Lee walked through the door into the hut two recreation center, looking for a cup of tea, and was greeted by the cheery face of Hermione Guthrie, her guide from last year. However, she had not seen her since arriving three days ago. The meetings were long and intense. Sue Lee was now convinced the Colossus was the work of a genius and would be fully operational in a month.
Hermione was a brilliant mathematician with a deep interest in Hollywood movie stars. She immediately started talking and thanking Sue Lee again for the autograph pictures she had sent her. Sue Lee acquired the film starsâ collection during the grand opening of the SÅ«nâs Gallery in Beverly Hills.
She had two more she brought along. A gift from Jane, who claimed she had no more room in her enormous trunks of clothing and left them behind. Sue Lee smiled to herself, remembering how packed that trunk was as Hermione talked.
She was bringing her up to date on all the latest gossip at Bletchley Park.
When she paused, Sue Lee said, âI have something for you.â She pulled a folder out from her bag and handed two signed photos, one Spencer Tracy. The other was Van Johnson.
After Hermione had finished squealing and showing everybody in the room her prize, she remembered the message for Sue Lee.
The message was from Janâs uncle, Sir Jonathan Snodgrass. He was here in Bletchley Park, in hut 10, and wished to join her for tea, quarter after the hour.
She wasnât familiar with hut 10 and asked Hermione about it.
âThatâs MI6, section, Meteorological, and secret stuff. Iâm sure he means to meet you here. I have to drop off some papers there, and Iâll tell him you will wait, okay?â
Sue Lee nodded yes and settled back in her lounge chair in a quiet corner of the recreation area. On the wall close to her was Italyâs map, and someone had been filling in advance of the allied troops.
Italy surrendered and removed the dictator Mussolini from office.
In October, Italy declared war on Germany. However, a successful rescue took place high in the Apennine Mountains.
They imprisoned Mussolini at Campo Imperatore Hotel when a trained German troop flew to the area in stealth gliders and overwhelmed 200 carabinierâs guarding him.
Now his rescue was propaganda to muster a resistance and slow the advancement.
The Italian conflict again halted any communications with Tommaso. âGoddamn war,â she said as Sir Jonathan sat down next to her.
âI agree. It is a goddamn war!â
âOh, sorry, sir,â she said.
