As Elizabeth hurried toward the Sweet Valley High library on Friday, she spotted Regina Morrow standing alone in the hall, studying a slip of paper in her hand. Elizabeth went over to her and tapped her shoulder gently.
Regina turned quickly. "Liz!" she exclaimed, a bright smile lighting up her features.
"Need some help?" Elizabeth asked.
Regina nodded and held out the paper. "I'm trying to find this room," she said. "I'm transferring into a different chemistry section today."
Elizabeth took the slip and read the number written on it. "That's Mr. Russo's room. I'm going in that direction myself. Come on."
As they went down the hall Regina said, "I've heard a lot about Mr. Russo."
"That he's a real ogre?" Elizabeth asked, laughing.
Regina laughed, too, and nodded. "That's what I heard."
"Don't you believe it," Elizabeth said. "He's tough, but he's fair."
"So are most of the teachers here," Regina said. "I've found that out already."
"Think you'll like it here?" Elizabeth asked.
"I know I will," Regina said. "It's a lot different from back East, but so far it's been great."
"I'm glad," Elizabeth said. Then she pointed to a door just beyond them. "That's Mr. Russo's class."
Regina left her, calling out "Thanks" over her shoulder.
As Elizabeth turned away, she almost bumped into Enid Rollins. "Hey!" Enid exclaimed. "What are you doing here? You don't have class with Mr. Russo now."
"I was just showing Regina Morrow where his room is," Elizabeth said.
Normally the two would have a million things to talk about. But now they walked on in silence. Finally Enid broke it, asking, "Liz, are you still worrying about your date with Nicholas?"
Elizabeth nodded. "Is it that obvious?"
"No, not really. But I can imagine what you're going through. And from the look on your face when you mentioned Regina, I figured that Sunday night was on your mind."
"I guess it is."
"Have you told Todd yet?" Enid asked.
Elizabeth shook her head. "No, I just can't seem to tell him. I know it's silly, but I want to talk to him in private, and I really haven't seen him alone since the party."
"Well, are you going out with him tomorrow?"
"Yes." Elizabeth bit her lip. "I guess it's tomorrow or never."
"Tell him, Liz," Enid urged. "Believe me, I know what can happen when you keep secrets from someone you love," she said, referring to the time she'd lost her boyfriend Ronnie because she'd kept the truth about her past hidden. "Besides," she added, "Todd's a much nicer guy than Ronnie. He'll understand."
"I hope so," Elizabeth said fervently. And at that moment she resolved to tell Todd everything on their date the following night.
From the window of her room, Elizabeth saw Todd's car rounding the corner, and she raced downstairs. Just as Todd was about to ring the bell, she opened the door, welcoming him with a "Hi!" and a ravishing smile.
"Hi, yourself!" Todd answered, catching her around the waist and pulling her toward him. He planted a long, lingering kiss on her mouth that sent chills of pure excitement racing up Elizabeth's spine.
