Chapter 11

Miami

My suitcase packing wasn’t the best. Most women would have their entire wardrobe laid out on their bed beforehand and a strategic plan as to what to wear on what days along with a few extras in case plans change. I, on the other hand, was more of a tactical planner. I’m going for ten days so I will take ten pairs of underwear, swimwear, jeans, tops, blouses and a few dinner dresses just in case I go anywhere nice. A selection of shoes to suit all occasions, including trainers, heels, a pair of boots and a pair of flats. Perfect—just my washbag, makeup bag and hairdryer to go in and I was done.

I also didn’t iron any of my clothes before I placed them in, it was a case of throw them in roughly because by the time I get there, they would be crumpled anyway. They would have an iron at the hotel, so I’d iron them there.

Sarah called me yesterday and informed me that she had seen on the corporate travel system that Oscar had booked flights to Miami and was leaving today. He had booked a return flight, business class the following week, and Sarah wondered why he was going. Everything that happened in the US was agreed to fall under Sarah’s jurisdiction, so why Oscar was travelling there without making her aware worried her enormously. Naturally, she wanted me to go too and see if I could follow him, find out what he was up to and if it was anything to do with business or just a holiday.

It gave me next to no time to organise everything and leave. My flights and accommodation were booked immediately by her and an itinerary of times and travel had been scheduled. A cab would collect me from outside my apartment tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm—my flight was at 5 pm. Oscar was on the earlier flight, so hopefully I wouldn’t bump into him at the airport, but I knew what hotel he was staying at and had to stay close.

I wondered if he was going with Emily or whether he was going on his own.

I struggled to sleep that night, wondering what Oscar would do if he found out I was following or indeed if he knew I was working for Sarah. The more I was finding out, the more I wondered what his involvement was in this case and just how dangerous he was.

I tossed and turned, a mixture of thoughts running through my head until the sun began to rise and it was time to get up. I could hear the rain outside pouring down and the harsh winter wind gushing against the windows. At least I would be pleased to escape the dreary English weather and head to somewhere warmer.

There were a few things I needed to get done before finally being collected and whisked away to the airport. I uploaded a few updates to the case files online, spoke to Hunter who had a spare set of keys for my apartment and warned me to be safe.
