Chapter Twelve

Grace woke with the last gray light of dusk filtering through the gap in the bedroom curtains. Declan lay on his back beside her, face slack, jaw dark with beard-shadow, powerful torso pressed against the mattress and outlined beneath the sheet and blanket. He smelled of man and sex, and she wanted to bury her face against his warm skin and breathe in that scent until she was dizzy with it. She was obsessed with him, which felt awkward and silly, but also powerful and amazing.

She eased out of bed and dressed, then went into the kitchen. Bear got up from his bed by the woodstove and followed her, a reproachful look in his brown eyes. “Don’t be jealous,” she told him and rubbed his ears. “I still love you.”

She fed him, then opened the refrigerator and searched for something to make for supper, but her mind refused to consider the practicalities of omelets or soup while Declan lay sleeping in her bed. She marveled at her own boldness, inviting him to stay with her. Everything about him should have threatened her peace of mind—the fact that he was a lawman, if a disgraced one. His amnesia, which only reminded her of the big gap in her own memory. He was too aware and perceptive, the kind of man who was bound to discover all her failings. The kind of person she had always avoided.

Yet she felt safe with him, though safe was too passive a term. She felt needed and cherished and giddy with passion.

She was cracking eggs into a bowl when she heard him approaching. She pretended not to notice until he came up behind her and pulled her close. He kissed the back of her neck, sending a shiver through her.

“Are you hungry?” she asked.

“Mmm.”

He sent her a wolfish look, and she laughed. “I meant for food.”

“That, too.” He kissed her again, then drew away, his expression serious. “After we eat, I should head back to town. Not that I wouldn’t like to stay, but...”

She nodded. “You have work to do.” And maybe they both needed some space to process this hurricane of emotion that had overtaken them. At least, she was pretty sure she did.

“I got a tip about a new waiter at a restaurant between here and Junction,” he said. “I want to check him out. You could come with me.”

“I don’t think so. I have work to do, too.” She was supposed to have finished the 1972 notebook by now, but being with Declan had her behind. “Do you want cheese in your omelet?”

“Yes, please.”

“The toaster is over there.” She nodded across the room. “You can toast some bread while I cook the eggs.”

They ate at the little kitchen table, chatting about mundane things. It was nice. Ordinary.

Afterward, she gave him a ride down to his truck. Before he left, she took his arm and gave him a hard look. “Be careful,” she said. “This man has attacked you twice. Next time he might kill you.
