Clawing her way back from an inky black fog, Shasta had no way to tell how much time had passed. All she knew was that she was in a small, dark place. She could tell it was small because the smells contained therein were acutely assaulting her nostrils, held close by walls she couldn’t see. And there were other wolves; two as far as she could tell, one male and one female. One had peed all over themself.

“Water?” she managed to ask, feeling worse than she had after Hudson had taken her to his bed, or after Damian had fished her out of the ocean and pumped seawater from her lungs.

“There is none.” The voice sounded like it was from a mild-mannered male wolf.

Shasta decided he was the one who’d peed himself for she could smell fear rolling off of him in the same way she’d once felt Hudson’s lust for her.

“This is your fault,” seethed the female wolf, sending her proclamation in Shasta’s direction.

“How do you figure that?” asked Shasta as she pushed herself off the floor into a sitting position. “Jesus that hurts. Did somebody kick me in the ribs?”

“A couple of the Hunters.”

Shasta shook her head. “Hudson will kill them for that.”

“Well at least your mate has the cajones to do something, but what makes you think he’ll find you or even come looking for you? He’s probably still in California.”

“No. He’s here. I got a warning of that right before I left my cottage.”

“That stupid little dwelling you rented. Good God! How could you want that when Hudson was offering you Coronado? Have you even seen the mansion and vineyard there? Nothing compares. And Hudson—now there’s an alpha wolf a she-wolf would want between her thighs, unlike this quivering bowl of gelatin I’m shackled to.” She spit and it sounded like it landed near the male wolf.

“If he’s so bad, why are you with him? Not meaning to offend you, whoever you are, but it seems your mate has a fairly low opinion of you.”

“My sire decided I would be mated to the elder of the two Rhodes brothers. Turns out the younger one would have been a better choice,” said the she-wolf.

“Chelsea, I would never have forced you. And for what it’s worth, I will give my life trying to protect you two.”

The she-wolf he’d called Chelsea snorted in disgust.

“You’re useless Miles.”

Two and two came together to make four. The wolf and she-wolf who were with her and had also been taken by Hunters were none other than Hudson’s erstwhile older brother and his bitch—literally—of a wife. Shasta searched her jacket pocket and found her keys.

“I doubt they brought that stupid little electric car with them,” said Chelsea.

Her eyes began adjusting to the darkness and Shasta smiled at her. “Maybe not, but they didn’t take away my mini-flashlight,” she said as she turned it on.

Running the light all along the perimeter, she was able to see they were in a small room of what appeared to be a warehouse.
