Getting in control of your money has little to do with your income. In your heart, you may still be convinced that if you just had more money everything would be peachy. Trust me. Whatever your present situation, it would only escalate if you had more money. If you’re in debt now, more money would only increase the debt. If you have difficulty saving now, more money would make it that much more difficult. Getting in control of your finances depends much more on your spending habits than the size of your paycheck.

It is going to be challenging to adjust your living expenses so that your debt repayment and current bills do not exceed 80 percent of your take-home pay. It will get easier in time, you can count on that. What’s more, I believe you are going to find a sense of relief in setting specific financial boundaries and then operating within them. Until now it’s possible your spending has had a “floating” limit determined by how much credit you could stir up or when the ATM machine refused to cough up any more cash.

Reducing your living expenses so they fit within 80 percent of your net income will require you to scrutinize every expense and then find the best way to reduce it. By reducing everything a little bit, you may be able to avoid eliminating any spending categories. But I’ll warn you now: this is going to require creativity and discipline. Thankfully, you have each other to share the requirement and the responsibility.
