The prince, accompanied by Alain, Andy and me, had come to meet Signore Pietro di Alberto, the curator of this exquisite collection, for a private viewing of these rare carriages. Up until this juncture, I had no idea the prince was an aficionado of past and contemporary modes of transportation.

While Pietro was explaining the intricate decoration of each unique antique carriage to His Highness and Monsieur Dubois, Andy and I ventured off to view the other exhibits that were on display. My Valet inquired as soon as we were out of earshot, “Did His Highness comment on the watch you are wearing?” I stared at my guardian and shook my head.

“Did he comment on your new watch?” I asked.

“No,” Andy responded before continuing, “I thought these gifts were from His Highness. It’s strange that he didn’t seem to notice that we are wearing them.”

“You did not answer my question when I asked who these presents were from. Didn’t a message accompany the gifts?” I questioned.

“Do you like your new watch?” he asked.

I stared dumbfounded at Monsieur Dubois. “Did you give us these watches?” I questioned.

He smiled and continued observing the carriage’s craftsmanship without replying. Now my curiosity was getting the better of me. I continued, “Did these gifts come from you, Sir? If they are from you, Andy and I would like to thank you for your generosity. What did we do to deserve such princely presents?”

Alain acted as if he hadn’t heard what I said. He continued examining an antique sedan chair, which had been used to carry the grand Duchess Maria Luisa de Borbone, the wife of Ferdinando III of Lorraine. He finally remarked, “Did you know, Young, that these impeccable moving works of art were once used by the refined gentlemen and sophisticated ladies of their day?” Before I had a chance to comment, he added, “It was not unheard for users to enjoy the occasional tryst within these equipages.” My professor gave me a wink and a nod before proceeding to examine the next exhibit. I followed behind.

“Ferdinando III of Lorraine was very fond of carriages, and upon his return from exile, he commissioned the construction of six luxurious berlins for himself and his court. This collection contains three of his carriages; among them is the
