Chapter 28: Traveling Blues

Stefan fought his body’s need for sleep.

The knowledge that Anne Le Morte was dead didn’t comfort him.

All he could focus on was the need to destroy his father.

It had gone beyond want or revenge.

Stefan understood that if he was going to survive, if he wanted to exact any sort of vengeance on his half-sister, then Ivan Denisovich would have to be out of the way.

At a little past eleven in the morning, Stefan stopped at a Home Depot. He exchanged pleasantries with the employees as he passed them by and carefully gathered those items he knew would be needed for the dangerous task ahead.

No firearms, he reminded himself. Ivan Denisovich had never been a fool, and he certainly wasn’t one in death. If Stefan were to enter the house armed, his father would know it before he reached the second floor.

What Stefan needed were subtle weapons. Tools he could use up close and personal, once he gained access to his father’s room.

And that was the one small hitch in the plan.

Stefan had been impressed with the Daniels boy’s ability to procure explosives. He had even hoped to use some of them to breach the door into his father’s room.

I’ll need to stop at a gun store as well, Stefan thought, loading small, pre-cut lengths of pipe into his shopping cart. He whistled as he selected caps for the pipes. Black powder season is about to start, no one will think twice about me buying a good supply of it.

A smile settled on his face as he went into the tool section and selected a Dremel tool and a drill-press setup. He found small, black oxide drill bits that would fit neatly in the Dremel, and added them to his growing collection of tools.

By the time he reached the fasteners aisle, Stefan had a variety of other items in his carriage. Soon, he added several boxes of cut-iron, coffin-head nails. From a display at the front of the store, Stefan picked up a heavy-duty canvas bag that would allow him to transport his weapons, once they had been fashioned.

When he arrived at the cashier, Stefan treated himself to a Kit-Kat bar and a bottle of Coke with the name, Santiago written on it.

He grinned at the older woman who rang up his purchases.

After she had placed everything in several bags, she asked, “Will this be going on your Home Depot card?”

“No,” Stefan said with a chuckle, taking out his wad of cash from the chop shop.

As he counted the bills, the woman said, “Looks like you’re getting ready to build some pipe bombs.”

Stefan let out a chortle and shook his head. “Nothing so exciting, I’m afraid. My youngest, he and his friends decided they wanted to make a robot for their Boy Scout troop.”

“Oh?” she asked, accepting the money he handed to her.

Stefan nodded. “Yes. There’s only one catch.”

“What’s that?” Her hands moved quickly across the keyboard of her register.

“They want it done for tonight,” he answered.

Her pleasant laughter followed him out of the store, but Stefan was already relegating the woman to the past.
