Chapter 18
There was something liberating about being on the back of a motorbike. As much as they scared me, the wind in my hair and the sense of freedom riding through the night filled with some awesome elation. Everything else dropped away, leaving me smiling in Deathâs presence. No Type B influence, just me.
And the firmness between my legsâ¦
âYou okay back there?â Death called, his hair the most incredible shimmer of copper and black.
âIâm fine!â I returned.
I came close to letting him go, to lifting my hands in the air. But thought better of it.
âYou can do it, you know?â
âWhat?â I yelled.
âI can feel your temptation. Go for it. You wonât fall.â
He could feel it? Well, I guess he was Death and harbored all sorts of powers.
âPut your hands in the air like you just donât care!â he declared, followed by a whoop.
I laughed, hesitant at first. We were moving so fast. What if he was wrong, and I fell and cracked my head open? Scrambled egg brains on the asphalt wasnât a good look.
âGo for it!â he cried again.
I counted down from five, terrified out of my mind, adrenaline pumping.
Five.
Four.
Threeâ
I went on three, throwing my arms above my head. I whooped in exaltation. Wow. Talk about fun and scary and just plain fucking awesome.
âGo, Marcel!â Death bellowed, ripping on that throttle.
He did a wheelie. I screamed and grabbed him again.
He roared with laughter. âSorry.â
But I wasnât mad. A further thrill of excitement shot through me. I released him, threw my arms out.
âDo it again!â
He did, me whooping and not falling off. Something held me to the bike. Probably his special brand of immortal magic.
I could do this all night.
The fun times died when we arrived at the sloping road leading down to the caves. Got really snuffed out when Death killed the engine outside the ominous maw waiting to swallow me again.
I slid off the bike. A cold sweat pooled at my spine, sending an army of icy shivers through me.
âDammitâ¦â I whispered.
âAre you okay?â Death asked, his hand on my shoulder.
I nodded, mouth dry.
âYouâre not, though.â
I shook my head.
âYou donât have to worry,â he added. âThe moment the poltergeist turns, itâs gone.â
âYou can do that?â
âYes.â
I swallowed, blinking at him. âDonât suppose you brought some wine with you?â
He smiled. âIt just so happens I did bring a little something.â He touched his right hip, a golden hip flask appearing from nowhere.
âWhat the hell?â
âDeath perk.â He winked. âHere, take a sip.â
I took the flask from him, the top popping off easily. The scent of aniseed wafted from it.
âAbsinthe,â he said.
âReally?â
âYes. Take a sip.â
âIsnât that super strong?â
He shrugged. âDepends on how you take your booze.â
I could already tell the drink would blow my socks off. âIâll pass. Thanks anyway.â
âSuit yourself.â He took a glug, then put the flask back to his right hip. It vanished within a second.
âWhenever youâre ready, weâll head inside.â
He handed me a torch.
âWhere did this come from?â I asked, taking it.
âAlready told you.â
âDeath perk.â
âExactly.â
Thatâs not really an answer.
