Twenty-One

I wake up in the same position I fell asleep in, on my side facing the door to my bathroom. Morning light filters in through the window about my head. I shift and feel something heavy resting on my waist.

Wait, what?

Moving so as not to rouse attention, I turn my head to see Breitling’s head resting on the pillow over my shoulder, eyes closed and breathing deep. And here I always imagined him sleeping flat on his back with his arms crossed over his chest, stiff and immobile until daybreak. But he looks so normal. So…human.

He sighs, and his breath tickles my cheek. Smiling, I lay my head down again, and for one insane moment, I consider going back to sleep. It had been another late night, and it’s so nice and warm here, all snuggled up in my puffy comforter…in his arms…

He shifts against me, and something hard presses into the back of my thigh. That sends me leaping out of bed faster than an Olympic high jumper.

“What…?” With nothing to brace him, Breitling rolls forward into the void my sudden departure left behind. He lifts his head and peers blearily up at me through dark blond strands. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, fine.” I grab my sweatshirt off the floor and bury myself, throwing the hood up so he won’t see the flames burning my cheeks. “Just…gonna put the coffee on.”

I dash out of the bedroom without looking at him.

Turning my attention to the coffee machine, I put a new filter in the machine and fill it with fresh grounds while doing my best to ignore the tremble in my fingers. It’s not like I’m a prude or anything. Even if I were, I am aware of the biological reasons for…that, and that it has nothing to do with sexual excitement. But that, and him…I shake my head. The two things are so at odds with each other, it will not compute.

He emerges from the bedroom a few minutes later. He’s still in his pajamas, but his hair looks somewhat tamed, as if he tried to comb it with his fingers.

“Good morning,” he says hoarsely, heading for the coffeemaker.

“Morning.” I conceal my face with my mug. “How’d you sleep?”

“Very well, thank you. And you?”

“Fine,” I say, but too quickly. The hand stirring the sugar into his coffee stops, and he studies me with an expression that starts out wary and ends up worried. He taps his spoon on the edge of his mug and sets it down. Though he’s looking at the counter, I can still see the red blooming in his cheeks.

“Adina, did something happen during the night? Because if I did anything that made you uncomfortable—”

“You didn’t,” I say, more embarrassed now that he’s embarrassed. “Even asleep, you were a perfect gentleman, and having you there made me feel better. So…thank you.”

“Okay, good. And you’re welcome.” His gaze briefly touches mine before he turns and brings his mug to his lips. He’s ready to move on, and to be honest, so am I.
