âBoys,â Dakota Boggs said, âthereâs no need to get ice in your boots. We own this territory. Besides, this Texas bounty hunter has no proof. Heâs never seen any of you before, and I hired drifters to haze him on the trail up.â
âHeâs here, ainât he?â Charlie Deets demanded.
âAnd not to pan for color,â Nat Hendry tossed in. âDakota, just today he killed Ace McGinnis out at Lookout Rock. A damned hard shot to make. Thatâs two men killed and two more beaten so hard their eyes are crossed.â
Boggs combed his lush mustache with a finger. âThen I guess itâs too bad I canât get men like Everett to back my play. Hell, I could set up Tammany politics in the sagebrush country.â
âWe ainât in no funninâ mood,â steamed Ike Bass, the fourth vigilante at the table. âJust now he left Bernie stove up for a week. Canât even move his head. And I came within a cat whisker of eatinâ lead. Everett might not have all the names yet, but heâll get them. And he made a point of mentioning his family.â
âHe sureâs hell knows you, Dakota,â Deets tossed in. âIf I blew a manâs hammer thumb off, heâd be high on the list of my enemies.â
Boggs poured more whiskey into his cup made of black buffalo horn. Nobody had to lower his voice at the Gem. There was a constant din of piano music, voices, and celebration whoops.
âHeâs got oysters on him. Iâll give him that,â Dakota said calmly. âBut weâll fix his flint. He wonât last two days in this gulch. Say, Jack McCall was a spineless half-wit, and he got Hickok, didnât he?â
âClean your ears,â Ike said. âI just faced Everett. He had plenty of reason to be on the scrap, but I never seen a man rile so cool. Never cursed, never scowled, never even raised his voice. Thatâs the dangerous type.â
âNo motherâs son scares me,â Boggs boasted. âI donât give a continental damn how many newspapers brag him up. Lead ainât partial to fame.â
Despite his brave words, Boggs knew what Ike meant. Cas Everett had a dangerous, confident calm about him that would worry any observant man. The money Stone MacGruder paid Dakota was good, but Boggs now realized it wouldnât be the âeasy moneyâ it first seemed.
âBoys,â he said, ânerve up. If we stick together, Everett will never be able to get names. Without names, heâll do no killing if we donât provoke him. Killing his people was a private job. I wasnât fool enough to tell anybody but you three who went with me. And Jimbo, of course, whoâd still be alive if he hadnât returned to that telegraph office in Louisiana to toss lead, the fool. MacGruder danced on air a week ago in Omaha, so he ainât singing.â
âJesus, Dakota, the man blew your cocking thumb off,â Ike argued. âOf course he suspects you.â
âHogwash. That alone is no reason to wipe out a manâs entire family, includinâ three women. Everett has to know that.
