Stefan and I spent the next several days pretty much the same way. He would wake up first and either bring coffee and breakfast upstairs so we could eat while we snuggled in bed, or I would attack him in the kitchen. The rest of our day was spent lounging in his living room watching his big ass TV or me kicking his ass at the latest Madden game. I did eventually break down and allow him to take me back to the hotel room I was renting so that we could gather up my stuff and I could check out. Despite wanting to keep some fraction of a distance between us emotionally, I couldn’t help but want to cocoon away in his house and have him all to myself.

That was suddenly dashed away when we heard his front door open and then shut early one morning.

“Stefan!”

We both freeze at the sound of Gemma’s voice floating up the stairs from the entranceway.

“I thought she wasn’t coming home til Friday evening?” I ask, frantically pulling up my jeans and trying to locate my bra and shirt.

“That’s what she said,” Stefan replies, pushing a leg through those damn gray sweatpants. Once he’s pulled on a muscle tank, he runs a hand over his head making the short strands stand up. My lips twitch into a small grin. He’s been letting it grow out the last week, whether consciously or not, and I kind of like it. It makes him look not so put together. “I’ll go down and see what the story is. Try to distract her while you get dressed.” He leans down as if he’s about to kiss me, but the creak of the first step gives us both pause.

If Gem were to come up those stairs right now… I squeeze my eyes closed and try not to think about it as Stefan rushes out of the room, closing the door behind him. Anybody who comes up those stairs has a direct view into the master bedroom when they’re about half way up… if the door’s open, which it most definitely was. The last thing I need right now is my best friend finding out this way. Especially when I have no intention of telling her.

A sharp pain lances through my heart when I think about leaving after this weekend. Stefan and I had grown so close over the last few days. It was beginning to feel like… we were in a relationship or something. I snort. Jumping each other’s bones does not make a relationship.

I hurried to gather every single piece of clothing of mine I can find around the room and stuff it into my duffel bag. Taking a deep breath and hold it as I ease open the bedroom door and peak around to make sure Gem isn’t coming up the stairs. When I hear her laugh coming from the kitchen followed by Stefan’s deep chuckle, I slowly tip toe out of the room careful not to step on the floorboards that creak and race down the hall to the guest room.
