Chapter 25
Elizabeth rolled onto her back and opened her eyes. It was Saturday morning. She could lie in bed as long as she liked. Maybe she would stay in her pajamas all day, like sheâd done the prior Saturday. And have another long, miserable day reliving Robertâs betrayals and nursing old wounds. Elizabeth drew a deep breath and flung the covers off.
She padded to the kitchen in the fluffy socks she now wore to bed every night, without worry about the snide remarks that Robert used to make about them. She reached for the canister of ground coffee that lived on a shelf above the coffee maker. There was barely enough to make half a cup. She pulled out a box of cereal and poured a serving into a bowl. The carton of milk emitted a sour odor when she opened it. She poured the milk down the drain and slung the container into the trash.
Elizabeth braced herself against the sink and swallowed hard. She was not going to dissolve into tears over the fact that she didnât have anything to eat for breakfast. Sheâd allowed this to happen and she was going to fix it. She was a grown woman, for heavenâs sake. Sheâd get dressed and go to the grocery on the corner.
She picked a notepad off of the counter and jotted down a list. When she finished, she returned to her bedroom to get dressed. She picked up the jeans that sheâd dropped into a heap on the floor and sat on the edge of the bed. She swiveled her head around the room. The usually tidy space was littered with dirty dishes, unread mail, and discarded clothes. The rest of the apartment was in similar disarray. How in the world had she let herself become so slovenly?
Elizabeth shoved her feet through the legs of her jeans and dug through the stack of clothes for a sweatshirt. She was going to spend the day cleaning and doing laundry. It was time she put her house back in order. She checked her supply of cleaning products and satisfied herself that she had what she needed. She stuffed her shopping list into her purse, donned her down jacket, and headed out of her apartment.
The morning was crisp and the skies were clear. It promised to be a sunny day. If she finished her tasks early, sheâd treat herself to lunch at her favorite bistro two blocks over.
She navigated the busy grocery with ease and was unloading her purchases in under an hour. She unwrapped the poppy seed bagel with strawberry cream cheese that sheâd bought at the deli counter and took a generous bite. She moved to the coffee maker and opened the bag of coffee sheâd just brought home. The heady aroma of freshly ground beans filled the air. She breathed in deeply and smiled. She scooped enough coffee into the basket to make an entire pot and pushed the brew button. When it was done, she took a large mug of coffee and her bagel into her bedroom.
