Moscow is the capital of Russia today, a sprawling nation that covers more land than any other country except Canada. But in Ivan’s day, Moscow was just one of several independent states. Some were called principalities, because they were ruled by princes. To create a new Russian nation, Ivan had to lead his armies against European principalities to his west and the remains of the Mongol empire to his east. He also had to weaken the power of Moscow’s boyars. These men were the most important princes and landowners of his realm. Ivan used violence and terror to help him achieve his goals. Today, we know him as Ivan the Terrible.
