Chapter 9 – Ed

I had been walking for over an hour … with no signs of life anywhere. Considering that it was a fine warm day there were no birds singing. Actually … there were no birds to be seen at all. It was the weirdest feeling walking in silence with only my footsteps for company. As I stared ahead … trying to see beyond the warm haze that was rising from the ground … I noticed a movement. It was too far away to identify properly … and the rising haze kind of distorted the shape. I stopped and tried to focus on the shape some distance ahead. After several minutes of straining my eyes it became clear I was looking at a figure of someone coming in my direction. My heart sank as I noticed that the unidentified figure was clearly limbering with its arms dangling by its sides. Another vague outlined shape appeared behind it. "Well … that's just fucking great" I cursed. It was too good to be true having the tracks all to myself. I thought about hiding behind some nearby bushes until they had passed but if I could see them then sure as hell the nearest of them had already seen me. I took out my meat clever from my backpack. There was only one thing for it. I would have to fight them and take them on. As I made my way forward three more shapes also appeared on the hazy horizon. It was clear I was going to be a busy boy. Pretty soon the nearest limbering bastard was only a few feet away and coming at me. I rushed at it headlong and swung my cleaver sideways at its head. I took the head clean from the shoulders as a spurt of deep red blood shot skywards from its gaping neck. It slumped to its knees and I helped the rest of it to the ground with a hefty kick to the chest. Considering that I was sore all over and feeling like shit … it felt good taking the limbering bastards out. It kind of gave me a second wind in a way … and I made my way towards the next one with a renewed spring in my step. This one came at me with his arms outstretched so I sidestepped it at the last moment and sunk the cleaver into the side of its face. The face split into two revealing bone and teeth. I pushed it away with force as I withdrew the cleaver and swung again this time aiming for its neck. The cleaver connected with the neck at an awkward angle. It didn't take the head clean off like the last one as I had intended … but had sunk in deep enough for the head to roll to one side. The limbering bastard was still trying to grab at me … even though its head was practically hanging off. It should have given up … but it didn't.
