I’m worried about Tristan as we get back in the car. He seems so absent. The wild passionate man who had almost scorched me to my core as I’d held him in my arms was gone. Those green eyes, which had burned like a primordial world being formed, where now filled with a kind of hollow resignation, and his plump and delicious lips where now set in a grim determined line.

This isn’t my Tristan. I shake my head to clear my thoughts for a second. He isn’t my Tristan yet… or maybe he is, because one thing I sure as hell know is that in that moment as he’d kissed me, he’d fucking owned me in a way no one else ever had. The connection between us had blazed white-hot for a blistering second, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I were to find the words Property of Tristan Everett branded on my soul.

I jam the keys in the ignition and switch the heating on full blast when he starts shivering again.

‘Where are we heading?’ I ask.

‘Sunrise Care Home in Shadwell,’ he says quietly, and although I’m surprised at his answer, I don’t say anything and simply type it into my phone and let Google maps find the directions.

Clipping my phone to the holder on the dash, I ease out onto the road and head toward Shadwell, which isn’t far from Whitechapel. We remain in silence for the drive, and I’m not sure he’s going to tell me anything when he suddenly speaks.

‘Do you remember me telling you my parents were older when they had me?’

‘Yes, I do,’ I say gently.

‘They were a lot older,’ he says as he stares out the window into the dark streets passing by. ‘I wasn’t just a miracle baby for them. I was a change of life baby for my mum, and my dad was already ten years older than her. But it didn’t matter, despite their age they still did all the things with me that younger parents would’ve, and after Mum died, Dad made sure I never felt ignored or unloved. He was always making up these crazy adventures for us. Every weekend when he wasn’t working, we’d set off to somewhere new, never with a plan, we’d just set out and see where we ended up.’

‘He sounds great,’ I say, and I mean it, although not having a clear plan and strict itinerary is my idea of hell and leaves my tidy organised soul with the cold sweats, I’d have given anything to have had that kind of attention from my father. Well, any attention to be honest.

‘He was,’ Tristan says so quietly that I almost miss it.

‘Was?’

He draws in a slow breath. ‘He has advanced vascular dementia.’

‘Tristan, I’m so sorry,’ I tell him, feeling that the words are too inadequate.

He shrugs. ‘It is what it is.’

‘Is this usual? The care home calling you in late at night?’ I ask with a frown.

He shrugs again. ‘It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last.
