I was back in Anna’s High School, facing her class from the corner of the room. Jason and Brent were both seated behind Anna, and I found an empty seat by the window. A buzzing quickly interrupted everyone’s daydreams.

“Hello students!” a muffled voice echoed through the loudspeakers. “This warning goes out to every senior of our graduating class. We all know how you love the trend of pranking, but to you derisory rebels: Don’t. If anyone decides to pull a senior prank this year, you will immediately be expelled and WILL NOT GRADUATE. So, think twice little ones and enjoy the rest of your day.”

It ended with audio feedback. Giggles chimed in across the teacher-less classroom.

“Hey, rich-rat,” Jason called out to Anna, who was seated in front of those twerps. “You’re joining our senior prank.”

“I-it’s okay, but thank you for the offer! It’s nice tha-”

“I said: you’re joining us.”

“Okay! Sure! Sounds great. Whenever you want!” she proceeded to giggle in a high squeal.

“You’ll buy the materials,” Jason ordered. “But, what should the prank be. What do you think, Brent?”

“How about we buy grasshoppers and let them out on the third floor?” suggested Brent, who was balancing a bitten-up pencil on his forehead. “And the sixth. Because Ms. Bodock’s a basket-case. Why not have crickets jump up her skirt and make her twerk?”

“What if we pour soap over the department floors?” Jason suggested.

“Wicked! Let’s do both!” Brent cheered. “Got it, pansy? I’ll give you a list of what we want.”

“Yeah, great!” Anna said. “Anytime. Just let me know, and I’m there like a dare.”

They stared at her and chuckled before slapping the back of her head.

“For now, I want the homework,” Jason said.

“Yup!” Anna jolted, reaching into her bag and pulling out a folder. “All in there.”

They were on a pathway to being expelled. This couldn’t be good. I knew Anna would get in trouble. Brilliant minds were rare, that’s true. But what happens when you group a bunch of idiots together? One of them, I’m sure, will run for president in the next twenty years.

A woman stepped into the classroom, “Bear with us. Your teacher is delayed in traffic. She will be a few minutes late.”

The class started to cheer as the woman stepped back out. I looked at Melinda crouched over the floor, fluttering her hand over a crinkled paper. The paper slid under a girl’s seat, as gracefully as if it were touched by a breeze.

“E-excuse me,” peeped the smallest voice I have ever heard.

Jason yanked a pack of M&M’s from the hands of a little girl with the tiniest fingers. Her eyebrows bent to the sides as she watched him gorge them down like an animal. He then fisted an entire handful of M&M’s into his mouth, snorting while he ate. The ones that didn’t fit, spurted right out and trickled onto the floor.

Focus on the assignment, Tina. Focus.

I got on my knees and attempted to move a green M&M from under the chair. And, surprisingly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought.
