Chapter Eight

Marelle

I make it to the stairs before I come to an abrupt stop.

My feet refuse to budge, torn between running back to Jax and demanding an explanation and running to my car.

Emotions are swelling like a tempest inside of me and I can’t seem to find one to latch on to.

I’m angry, I’m hurt, and I’m incredibly aroused.

I don’t know what Jaxson Reid is trying to do to me, but if he’s trying to make me crazier, he’s damn well succeeding.

I slump on the stairs, my head in my hands as I try to make sense of what I know I can’t.

There is nothing sensible about running to the man I hurt, and it absolutely doesn’t make any sense I just kissed him.

I can’t even deny it anymore. I came because I never stopped thinking about him.

Every man I’ve dated, I’ve compared to Jax. Every time I’ve seen a muscled man in the street, even though I knew it was ridiculous, I’ve hoped it might be him.

I’ve kept up to date with what he’s been doing, tracked him on social media, and the first chance I got, I came running back to him.

I’ve tried and failed miserably not to think about him for the past five years. What on earth was I thinking involving him in this?

I bury my face in my hands, groaning as I see how messed up I am.

“Marelle?”

My head snaps up so fast I have to wait until my vision clears before I can see his bulky outline.

“That shouldn’t have happened,” he says softly.

I use the handrail to pull myself to standing. “And I shouldn’t have come here. It’s confusing for us both,” I say.

He blows out a breath. “Ayuh, it is. But it doesn’t need to be,” he says.

“Oh? How can we stop it?”

He leans against the wall and gives me a half smile. “We could start by being honest with each other.”

Heat washes over my face as I consider his reaction if I told him I’ve been comparing other men to him all these years.

“I think we can both agree this is complicated enough without bringing sex into it.”

My embarrassment doesn’t subside as he looks at me. “It is.”

“So, we agree, sex is off the table?”

I don’t know why I’m hesitating, probably because I have been involuntarily celibate for over a year now, but it’s harder to agree than it should be.

“Okay. It’s off the table,” I say.

He runs a hand over his head and nods. “So, since we’ve cleared that up and since I’m taking an unofficial day off, how about you help me in the kitchen?”

“I thought you said the restaurant was closed today?”

He pushes off the wall. “It is.”

My curiosity now piqued I trail after him as he walks back into the kitchen. “What are you making?”

“Vegan mac & cheese with broccoli, roasted vegetable lasagna, curry, and chocolate cake,” he says.

As he starts pulling the ingredients out, it’s clear these meals won’t be menu items.

He grabs an apron off the wall and hands me one.
