Chapter Eight
Marelle
I make it to the stairs before I come to an abrupt stop.
My feet refuse to budge, torn between running back to Jax and demanding an explanation and running to my car.
Emotions are swelling like a tempest inside of me and I canât seem to find one to latch on to.
Iâm angry, Iâm hurt, and Iâm incredibly aroused.
I donât know what Jaxson Reid is trying to do to me, but if heâs trying to make me crazier, heâs damn well succeeding.
I slump on the stairs, my head in my hands as I try to make sense of what I know I canât.
There is nothing sensible about running to the man I hurt, and it absolutely doesnât make any sense I just kissed him.
I canât even deny it anymore. I came because I never stopped thinking about him.
Every man Iâve dated, Iâve compared to Jax. Every time Iâve seen a muscled man in the street, even though I knew it was ridiculous, Iâve hoped it might be him.
Iâve kept up to date with what heâs been doing, tracked him on social media, and the first chance I got, I came running back to him.
Iâve tried and failed miserably not to think about him for the past five years. What on earth was I thinking involving him in this?
I bury my face in my hands, groaning as I see how messed up I am.
âMarelle?â
My head snaps up so fast I have to wait until my vision clears before I can see his bulky outline.
âThat shouldnât have happened,â he says softly.
I use the handrail to pull myself to standing. âAnd I shouldnât have come here. Itâs confusing for us both,â I say.
He blows out a breath. âAyuh, it is. But it doesnât need to be,â he says.
âOh? How can we stop it?â
He leans against the wall and gives me a half smile. âWe could start by being honest with each other.â
Heat washes over my face as I consider his reaction if I told him Iâve been comparing other men to him all these years.
âI think we can both agree this is complicated enough without bringing sex into it.â
My embarrassment doesnât subside as he looks at me. âIt is.â
âSo, we agree, sex is off the table?â
I donât know why Iâm hesitating, probably because I have been involuntarily celibate for over a year now, but itâs harder to agree than it should be.
âOkay. Itâs off the table,â I say.
He runs a hand over his head and nods. âSo, since weâve cleared that up and since Iâm taking an unofficial day off, how about you help me in the kitchen?â
âI thought you said the restaurant was closed today?â
He pushes off the wall. âIt is.â
My curiosity now piqued I trail after him as he walks back into the kitchen. âWhat are you making?â
âVegan mac & cheese with broccoli, roasted vegetable lasagna, curry, and chocolate cake,â he says.
As he starts pulling the ingredients out, itâs clear these meals wonât be menu items.
He grabs an apron off the wall and hands me one.
