The interview with Sakko had been inconclusive. Too much pressure on the mast. A problem with the layup.

Something like that.

The RAAW Director reported that the official race investigators had found no evidence of sabotage when they had been on board the Satari. Yes, he agreed that the breaks in the carbon fiber mast were unusual, but that was all they were.

There was a pattern here, if only he could find it.

And then there was the betrayal. His magazine had already had the information about the Satari and her secret keel. Big surprise. Why hadn’t La DL dropped even a hint that it was coming? Why leave him hanging? And why had Megasail run his article and drawing of the Swagwoman keel in the magazine’s back pages, obviously downplaying the whole effort.

Maginawa had practically snickered in his face. On camera.

Sam wasn’t answering his calls. Including the one he had just tried 10 minutes ago. He had let the phone ring and ring on her personal number. He left a message. Fat chance she’d return his call.

A gust of raw wind whipped over the old waterfront; below him lapped dark waters.

Kevlin’s shoulder was starting to ache, an old injury that flared up when he was tired.

Somewhere in the distance, the Staten Island Ferry chugged lonesomely; a fog horn sounded. The mists were wet on his face and hair as he stood looking silently over the waters.

Tomorrow the greatest race in history would begin.

Somewhere out there, and closer to home, powerful forces were gathering.

He wondered what would happen next.
