Vikram must be getting desperate.

He shoved both phones away and plastered a smile on his face as he turned to his family.

“Right, who fancies an ice cream?”

He was clearly on edge but trying to act normal for the rest of the day. He wasn’t sure he’d managed it. In the end, Rego excused himself to go and make the call. He heartily wished that this case had never dropped in his lap, then before he could talk himself out of it, he called Sergeant Ed Bladen, the Bronze Commander at Culdrose, a member of the MoD Police.

Bladen was surprised to hear from Rego so soon after having submitted the information about Jameson’s service record, but remained polite, and agreed when proposed that a meeting of minds between D&C Police, the Culdrose RNPs and MoD plods would help to foster a useful working relationship.

In other words, Rego was lying through his teeth.

Bladen was even more surprised when Rego suggested that they meet up as soon as possible.

“Actually, Sergeant Bladen, I was wondering if we could meet for an informal chat first so when we have our tri-party meeting, we know that we’ll be moving in the same direction.”

Bladen hesitated for a moment and then agreed to meet Rego at the Blue Anchor in Helston that evening.

Rego hoped that Cassie would forgive him.

She wasn’t happy; in fact, she didn’t say much at all, so Rego kept his head down and promised he wouldn’t be long.

But when they arrived back at the cottage, forgiving was the last emotion he was going to get from her.

He dropped Cassie and the kids off at the cottage with all their towels, bags and empty coolers, then went to park the car. He walked back slowly, mentally planning how he was going to handle the meeting with Bladen, when he was confronted with a furious Cassie channelling her inner Amazon as she scowled at him.

“Your! Mother! Is! Here!” she hissed at him, the moment he opened the kitchen door.

He stared at her, bemused, until he heard his mother’s voice shattering the silence for a mile around.

“Robert! Robert, is that you? Is that my bwoy?”

His eyes widened. “What is she doing here?” he whispered to Cassie.

“Don’t ask me, ask her!” she replied angrily. “I thought you’d sorted this out, Rob! You told me that she understood we needed this time for us.”

“I did!”

“Clearly,” she snarled.

“I’ll talk to her.”

“You’ll do more than that, Rob. You’ll put her on the next train home.”

“Cassie…”

“The next train, I mean it.” She paused dramatically. “That’s if you want to stay married to me. I’m going for a walk.”

And she slammed out of the door.

Patricia Rego was a formidable woman, and no one underestimated her twice, so Rego knew that he couldn’t give in to the tears and tantrums that were sure to follow.

“Hello, Mum. This is a surprise.”

The end of his sentence was muffled as she wrapped her arms around him and yanked his head down, almost smothering him against her substantial bosom.

Maisie giggled and even Max cracked a smile.
