Chapter 20

ALTHOUGH I’D NEVER been known to take a case just for money, the decision became easier when Wendell promised another ten thousand on top of the initial proposed fee for our services. And by the time we were back at the office, Alex and I had both fully committed to helping prove Ray’s innocence.

Whether we believed he was innocent was another story.

It didn’t mean we had an answer or were foolish enough to believe we were even close to having another suspect. Just making the decision to take the case was a start.

We knew we were under the gun. And with less than two weeks until trial, time wasn’t on our side. We had a short list of people we wanted to talk to, if for no other reason than to get a hook in the water.

The truth was, we had no suspects at all.

And like pulling a name from a hat, we started with Mindy Hawkins.

We pulled up in front of Mindy’s house. A Volvo station wagon was parked behind her Lexus, a FOR SALE sign in the rear window. Funny, it was the same model we had when I was a kid, the Volvo 240 station wagon. We had a yellow one. The one parked in the driveway was blue, though the paint was faded. It had a University of South Carolina sticker on the bumper.

I wasn’t in the market for another car but couldn’t help but wonder about the asking price. I liked the old vintage cars.

We parked out on the street and walked up the driveway. I looked inside both cars as we walked past, toward the front door. I rang the doorbell, and after at least a minute, the door finally opened. It was Mindy’s sister, the one we’d met the first time we stopped by to talk to Mindy.

“Oh, uh, we were hoping to talk to Mindy? If she’s home?”

She looked me over, then Alex, shaking her head. “You were here the other day, weren’t you? The private investigators?”

I nodded. “I’m Henry.” I gave a nod to Alex. “This is Alex.”

Alex said, “You’re Kim? Did I get that right?”

The sister nodded. “Is there something I can help you with?”

“We’d like to talk to Mindy,” I said.

Kim held a stare on me for a moment, slowly shaking her head. She looked back into the house. “I’m sorry. It’s just not a good time for her. She’s lying down.”

“Oh,” I said. “Is she sick?”

“She’s resting. It’s been a long few weeks for her. I’m not sure what you want to talk to her about, but between Barry’s death and another friend of hers who recently died...”

“Are you referring to Shondra Rivers, by any chance?” I said.

Kim nodded. “Yes. It was quite a shock to Mindy. So, if you don’t mind, I’ll tell her you stopped by.” She started to close the door.

But I stepped forward and put my hand up to stop her from closing it. “If she’s feeling all right, I mean, if she’s not ill, I’d still like to talk to her.
