Swan invited me to ride along with him, which sounded good in theory, but it turned out to be kind of uncomfortable. I kept imagining he could read my mind and knew about mine and Lyndy’s illegal activities when we were teens.
While I was sure the statute of limitations was up on the crime of toilet papering old man Lynch’s house and the dozens of prank calls we’d peppered him with, a part of me was sure they would try to pin his heart attack on us.
The truth was that he’d died in a nursing home a few years ago, and from what I’d heard, he’d been just as mean and ornery on the day he died, as he’d always been.
I couldn’t help but wonder if the Man upstairs had torn him a good one for shooting rock salt at any kid that dared to cross one of his fields?
“What’s on your mind?” Swan glanced over at me. “You seem a little preoccupied.”
I shook my head. “Nothing,” I answered a little too quickly. “Nothing at all. Just anxious to get this case done and over with.”
“You and me both,” he grumbled. “But I still don’t know if I swallow that ghost bit. I mean, technically, how could a ghost kill someone? Even saying they were real, they wouldn’t be anything more than apparitions … right?”
I shrugged. “I’m new at this, remember?”
“I know, but still.” He shook his head.
“This is what I’ve been able to learn about them, through research and interaction. Most of the time, they are just energy. They might be a ball of light or you may not even see them, but if they go long enough feeding off the energy of the living, the dead can temporarily take on solid form.”
Swan looked doubtful, but said nothing.
Taking that as an invitation to continue explaining my theory, that’s exactly what I did. “Think about it. How can they toss things around a room, which they have been known to do, if they are not strong enough to manipulate physical objects? If they can absorb enough energy, possibly they can seem more solid. I mean … they would still be energy, but at a high enough concentration they would seem solid.”
“And the weapons he uses to kill our victims?” Swan asked.
“Them too. The ghost would be projecting what he wanted … and they could be real enough to cause real damage.”
“I guess that makes some sense … but where would this ghost be getting that kind of energy?”
“Now this is still just theory,” I reminded him, “but maybe they can absorb it from power lines, electrical storms … as well as from a witch who chooses to super blast a certain ghost with earth energy.”
“As strange as it sounds … you are actually making some sense,” he commented.
I would have taken his comment as a compliment if he hadn’t said it with a frown on his face.
Regardless of the fact that what I was saying might make sense, he was still having problems believing it.
