I followed Castle Hill avenue for a mile or so north, listening to the desultory squeak of the wipers, till we came to the Café Havana. In the cold and the rain, it looked like just the job. I pulled up outside, Dehan dumped her Australian hat on her head, and we loped across the sidewalk and pushed inside.
A bell clanked overhead and Julio, the bored-looking owner behind the bar, cheered up when he saw us.
âHey, parejita! How you doinâ, man? You come to brighten up my afternoon?â
âItâs what we live for, Julio, you know that.â
We ordered a couple of beers and some chicken and black beans up at the bar, then found a table by the wood burner he had against one wall, next to a mural of a 1947 Chrysler Windsor with a half-naked Cuban girl leaning against the hood.
Dehan sat back in her chair and stretched out her long legs toward the fire. I took a couple of paper napkins and dried my hair with them. She said, âYou like her for it?â
I stared at the flames a moment. âI donât know. We still have the same problem we had with Samantha. Sheâs mad enough for it. David seems to have been a guy who knew how to make women mad. But I donât see the passion in the killing.â
She was staring at her boots, like it was them talking to her. When I finished, she nodded at them and said. âI donât like her for it.â She chewed her lip for a bit, then said, âThereâs something missing.â
Julio brought over our beers and I took a long pull. As I set down the glass, I said, âI agree. And itâs something to do with the laptop and his article. This feels like an execution, not a crime of passion.â
She made a face like Iâd just said two and two made four point zero one. âI donât know, Stone. I donât see it that clearly.â She finally turned to look at me. âItâs too much of a coincidence, isnât it?â
âYou just said you didnât like Katie for it.â
She sighed. âI know.â She swiveled around and leaned her elbows on the table. âHe finishes his article, decides itâs going to make him rich and famous, decides to tell Katie about Samantha, and Samantha about Katie, Katie dumps him and moves out, his laptop and his papers disappear and he gets executedâall in the space of a week. There is no way these events are not connected.â
âI agree, but Iâm damned if I can see how at the moment.â
She gave me a lopsided smile and I was momentarily distracted by how extraordinarily beautiful her face was. âOh, Mighty Sensei, a full morning into the investigation and you donât know the answer? You must be getting old.â
She took a pull on her beer, smacked her lips, and examined the glass for a moment.
âHow does this work? He finishes his article, and having put it all together, he realizes he has a bombshell on his hands.
