NINE

I parked the Scythe in the underground garage.

Byako whistled as she admired the superior craftsmanship exhibited by a SuNaTran vehicle. I had to share her admiration. The Scythe was an impressive—and suicidal— expression of a motorcycle.

“How many of those did Cecil make?” Byako asked. “Can I borrow it?”

“One, to my knowledge, and no,” I said. “It’s keyed to me. If you or anyone besides myself attempts to ride it, I’ve been informed it will detonate spectacularly.”

“Sounds like Cecil,” she said with a smile. “Don’t worry. SuNaTran will be over later to deliver it to Sabine. Your ride will be safe. You, on the other hand, not so much.”

“You know of Sabine,” I said, not really surprised. “How?”

“You know that’s exactly what I keep asking myself: How does she work with you?” she answered, dodging my question. “I mean, without strangling you on a daily basis.”

“Where did you get the information?”

“Open your eyes, Iker,” she said as we headed to a vehicle parked near the rear of the garage. “I work for the Director of the Dark Council. Finding out everything about you wasn’t even a warm-up. I do like Sabine, though. You should keep her.”

“I’m glad you approve.”

I made a mental note to have Sabine redouble her efforts at security. We were going to have to scrub everything and start again from scratch. Operational security demanded a minimal digital footprint.

She would not be pleased.

“Don’t bother,” Byako said as if she could read my mind. “I know that look, and it won’t help you. Even if you burned everything, I could still find you both…again. Consider this as the cost of doing business. You don’t get to hide from me…or the Director…ever. May have to change the name to Iker the semi-Unseen.”

We approached another SuNaTran vehicle.

I looked around the garage and noticed the UV lights that had nearly ended my existence. Stepping into the space that almost became my tomb felt odd, but it was no less strange than getting into a vehicle with the Director and her second as we exited her home and headed to meet with Solis.

Nakatomi was in the driver’s seat.

“You’re driving?” I asked, glancing at Byako. “Is this safe?”

“For the purpose of this mission, I will drive,” Nakatomi said. “Byako won’t be joining us as we meet Solis. She has…other concerns.”

Byako nodded and smiled.

“No need to be concerned, the Director can drive,” Byako said. “She just isn’t intent on following the rules of the road. To her, they’re more like suggestions.”

“Nonsense, I’m a superb driver. The rules are absurd.”

I contemplated taking the Scythe. Dying in the fiery inferno aftermath of a crash was not my idea of an ideal death.

“I mean this as no offense, but can you drive?” I asked.

“Still your mind, assassin. If you are going to die tonight, it won’t be due to my driving skills,” she said. “You have greater threats to focus on.”

“True,” I said. “I was asking as a matter of course, not from a position of fear.”

“Understood,” she said. “Once we reach the Chrysler Building we will ascend using the secondary hidden stairwell.
