CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“What took you so long?” Zoey asked impatiently.

“What did he want to talk to you about?” Scott’s expression was concerned.

“Let’s head to the rocks,” Kelly said. “The sun is going down quickly.”

She led the way back to the limestone outcropping she and Scott had discovered earlier that day. They walked quickly, following Kelly who moved like a person possessed. It wasn’t that she was anxious to see the sunset; she was just trying to process all she had learned in the last few minutes.

“This is sick!” Zoey exclaimed when they reached the rocks and she saw the pool.

“This is where we’re going to give the kids a swimming lesson tomorrow,” Scott told her.

Kelly didn’t pause at the pool, but climbed up the rugged limestone, not stopping until she was on the top. It wasn’t but about ten feet above the beach, but it provided an amazing view of the sun setting behind the mangroves. Strings of clouds hung across the blue sky, ready to catch and magnify the colors of the sunset. Kelly plopped down on the large flat stone on top and pulled her knees up and rested her chin on them.

“Ready to talk about it?” Austin asked, sitting beside her and studying her with concern.

“I overheard a conversation between Manny and Julio when I went for the Aloe,” she said. “I mean, really, Manny’s voice projects, so it would have been difficult to ignore.”

“It’s Manny now for you, too?” Scott teased.

“Okay, so he kind of won me over,” Kelly admitted. “Anyway, he was pushing Julio to fix the boat and Julio said that Manny knew he wasn’t a mechanic and that Manny hadn’t kept his promise.”

“What promise?” Zoey prompted. She loved gossip, and this was as close to it as she had come since they had arrived.

“Apparently, Julio had been one of those Mariel boatlift refugees, but he hadn’t been able to get his family out with him. Julio said he would work for Manny if Manny would help get his family out of Cuba.”

“And clearly that hasn’t happened, so Julio is getting a little antsy,” Scott supplied the next piece of the story.

“Exactly. Manny said he was trying and asked Julio to be patient, but . . .”

Everyone leaned closer, waiting for the punch line.

“Julio said that Manny wouldn’t be so patient if it was his family that wasn’t safe.”

“That kinda sounds like a threat,” Austin commented.

“It did to me, too,” Kelly agreed.

“So why did Manny want to talk to you?” Scott asked.

“I didn’t think they knew I was there, but they saw me. Or maybe Manny figured it out because of the Aloe. He wanted to know if I had any questions about what I had heard. And of course I asked him what the promise had been, and that’s when he told me the story about Julio and his family.” Kelly smiled. “And he told me that Juanita had actually been an early refugee, and that they fell in love and have been married for almost six years.
