Noon
“Mom, do we have to go? I mean… I am so tired, I just want to stay home and do nothing,” I whined, but kept stuffing my clothes into my backpack.
“Edi, drop it, please. Your grandmother misses you. Besides,” Mom said, smiling and tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, “once you start college, you’ll never have time.”
“Yeah, but I could be working—”
She pressed a finger to my lips and I held my tongue. “Enough. We’ll manage. You don’t have to spend every waking hour working. We have enough for your college and my expenses here.”
I sighed and slumped my shoulders. I knew there was no point in arguing any further. The work excuse wouldn’t work. I hadn’t seen my grandma in ages and I’d refused to go there for a while now. She’d come and stayed with us for a month or so during the worst of winter, but I hadn’t seen her since.
The baccalaureate was long gone and I’d passed all six of the exams. I’d gotten those BAC grades added to my high school graduation diploma and used it to sign up for Uni exams. I’d opted for both Economic Studies Academy and the Polytechnics University, as they both had programming degrees. I wanted to get into Poly, but hey, better safe than sorry. It had meant four different exams in a week, but I’d gotten into both. Better grades on the Poly exams, as expected. I’d kind of guessed I’d be in and had put minimum effort into the ESA exams.
This whole effort had taken a month from my summer holiday, but I wasn’t too bummed about that. University started in October, not September, like high school, so I’d only lost a couple of weeks.
I was planning on working all summer and, now that I had graduated and passed my admittance exams for Uni, I was allowed to switch to bartending. The other bartender had been training me for a while now, but my mom didn’t have to know everything. Even if she found out now, she’d still nag me about not having dedicated all my time and brainpower to studying for my exams instead of learning how to mix cocktails.
It would mean a bit more money and my usual share of the tips while working. I’d soon have enough for the move to Bucharest and I was planning on helping my mom as much as could. Buying books, stationery, and some new clothes for the autumn would be my responsibility.
But the real reason I didn’t want to go to Grandma’s was a lot more twisted than my need to work and have the funds I needed for Uni. I knew Robert was there. We’d called Grandma the night before and she’d shared the news. Robert had just arrived and was thrilled to see me and congratulate me on getting into Uni.
I’d avoided him like the plague since our last text exchange. He’d send a text now and then, but I never replied. He had a girlfriend, so I didn’t want to have anything to do with him.
