CHAPTER 14

AURORA

My sparrow’s cheerful chirp drew my attention from the storybook I’d been reading. I stroked my new pet’s shiny feathers, no longer malted from neglect. He leaned against my touch before resuming his energetic hopping along the windowsill to feast on the crumbs I’d scattered, vibrant and whole once more. Following his healing I’d attempted to release him back into the wild, but he seemed content to stay with me for now, another friend I’d made in my new home.

Home…it was surprising that I could already begin to think of this place in such a way, yet for the first time I had true relationships, ones built on honesty and developing trust rather than Mother’s motives that I was now forced to realize were less than pure.

The heated prickle from Glimmer’s pointed attention towards the cheerful sparrow caused me to pluck it from where it had settled near my feet and place it securely on my lap. My spoiled shadow happily accepted my attempts at distraction and instead turned its beady focus to my book with a curious air, purring contentedly as I began to pet it.

I turned a page with a rustle of paper and the shadowy semblance of a paw flashed out to bat at it. Laughing, I lifted the book out of Glimmer’s reach but turned the volume to show the picture of a couple at their wedding to my pet, who showed interest only in the ribbon bookmark that hung temptingly close to its reach.

“I’ve been exploring the library for stories to help me on my latest quest.” I slowly flipped through the tales of romance.

Though I’d experienced some success in developing my light magic, I hadn’t yet progressed beyond creating small sparks, but based on how those tiny glimpses of light had encouraged Ciaran, I was becoming more and more convinced that the key to saving Lumeria was not focusing on my own magic, but combating the shadows that oppressed my husband.

We would need to work together to save the kingdom. But though he had begun to at least tolerate my company, it didn’t yet seem that love was growing between us to strengthen our bond and give us the ability to truly work as one. So I was determined to nurture that most powerful of emotions, hoping that shining light into each other’s hearts would be the beginning of bringing it back to all of Lumeria.

Due to my inexperience with love deeper than familial affection—as well as my realization that even that experience was lacking the depth of true family bond as my mother had been largely absent from my life—I’d spent the morning studying the concept of how to develop love with a significant other, searching for patterns amongst the various journeys shared between different heroes and heroines.

My cheeks warmed whenever I came across a passage detailing affectionate gestures between couples—holding hands, a tender embrace, a kiss. I simultaneously couldn’t imagine doing such a thing with Ciaran and experienced a tinge of longing, a promising emotion that stoked my determination for the path I’d chosen.
