CHAPTER 23

WE MAKE WALLS

Jon waited for the doors to close. Afterward, he couldn’t help but sigh. This was done not because he was out of breath or because he was relieved. It was done from sheer exhaustion and fatigue. An exchange, Jon thought, would have surely ended sooner. No, it stretched out longer than expected.

“Jesus, that was some serious—”

“Bullshit,” interrupted Danix.

“I can’t believe what just happened. Was that even real?” Jon faced Danix when he asked this question.

Danix also turned to see Jon before replying. “As real as it gets, right Addison?”

Jon watched as Addison’s posture hadn’t changed since the lawyer and Frankie left his office.

“Yes, sir.”

“Well,” said Jon. He pivoted to face Addison. “What does this mean?”

“What does this mean?” Addison repeated.

“Yeah,” said Jon.

“It means we’re about to be taken for quite a ride.”

“Who?” asked Danix. “Us, the bouncers? The Doormen?”

“No,” said Addison. His voice cracked as he leaned back so far he was almost falling off his chair. “It’s an attack against the entire club.”

What Addison said implied that everyone was now being targeted.

Now, Jon was unsure how to interpret or understand an act of incredible hatred. “You mean, like, what…we’re going to have to close down?”

Addison was seated as he heard this question.

“No. We’ll be open,” he said, “but we’ll just be more compromised. Now that a lawyer for the Castellani family has come here, he means business. It’s all just another attempt to confront his son that could have drastic consequences.”

“Hold up there,” said Danix. “I thought you said we were in the right doing what we did?”

“Yeah,” said Li, “he was dealing something for sure. I mean, I saw too.”

“What we saw doesn’t matter,” said Addison. He exhaled and reached for his collar to loosen his tie. “What we can prove is all that does.”

“You’re saying we can’t prove it?”

“Not in court, we can’t,” Addison said to Jon. “No.”

“Well, will there be a lawsuit?” Jon asked, voicing his concern while giving Addison a furious stare.

“Not exactly, but we can’t ban Frankie from entering our club. Given his status and his willingness to get legal, it will only make things worse. Marking him is the best we can do.”

“Then, we go to the police,” advised Li. “We can’t arrest people, but they can.”

“Which is what worries me the most,” answered Addison.

“How so?” asked Danix.

“I don’t think what we saw here was happening the way we thought.”

Again lost, the feelings of anxiety formerly exclusive to Jon when in the military had suddenly returned. Jon just couldn’t weigh the implications behind Addison’s reply.

“Police would have arrested anyone else in his position, but they didn’t. Why?”

“Because he’s goddamn Frankie Castellani,” said Danix, “that’s why.”

Jon could see Danix shaking his head. Jon stood back in disbelief. The situation was enough to cause such a gargantuan man like Danix to be taken back.

“Maybe, but that’s only half the puzzle,” said Addison.

“And the other half?” asked Li.

“That’s still being formulated,” said Addison, “but if you want my opinion—”

“No,” said Jon. Suddenly, he interrupted Addison, which was something no one had the balls to do.
